Rob McElhenney is stepping into a new era, and with a new name.
The It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star, 48, recently announced he's shortening name to Rob Mac, and now, he's breaking down the reason behind the change in true Mac fashion—with humor and a touch of brutal honesty.
"Hi! Okay, I'm going to dedicate exactly one minute to this. Start the clock," McElhenney said in a video shared to X, as a 60-second timer popped up on screen. "Yes, I'm shortening my name to Rob Mac. Mostly a stage name, but I digress. Is it kinda douchey? Sure. But the amount of time that I have wasted trying to get people to either say or spell my name correctly is days of my life."

"Not only have many generations changed the spelling, the current one was just given to my ancestor by a government official who decided that this was now the spelling," he explained.
"Times have changed and most people already call me Rob Mac anyway. My family knows me and loves me, regardless of how many syllables I have and that's the only thing that I really care about," McElhenney continued.
"There are so many things going on in the world and this is a silly one to waste your time on. Honestly, call me whatever you want," he said, before showing photos of other celebrities who go by names they weren't born with—including Lady Gaga and Jamie Foxx.
"Maybe we just keep it simple and try Rob Mac, let's see how it goes," he concluded.
The actor first revealed the name change in his recent Variety cover story, where he shared that the shift just makes life easier.
"As I get older, and people are more prone to calling me 'Mr.' or 'Sir,' I just say Rob or Rob Mac," he told the outlet. "And I find that that makes things a lot simpler and easier. People already call me Rob Mac or Mac, obviously, from the television show and it just makes things so much easier."
The name change is something other members of his family have considered as well, with McElhenney telling the outlet, "My brother said, 'I was actually considering running for government in Culver City, and I was going to be 'Pat Mac.'" His sister, Katie, who has written on It's Always Sunny, also revealed an interest in going by the shorter moniker, telling her brother: "'literally every person in the world calls me Katie Mac.'"
As for McElhenney's wife and co-star, Kaitlin Olson, she's not totally on board yet.
"The kids are really not happy about it, because they have that last name," Olson, 49, said in her conversation with Variety. "And so do I, legally!"
