GM James Gladstone on what to expect from Jaguars defense in 2025

Naturally, Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars’ offense is going to garner a lot of attention, but the defense is expected to look quite different as well.

At the NFL combine on Tuesday, new general manager James Gladstone highlighted what we can expect from the Jaguars’ defense moving forward.

“We’ll be an urgent and explosive bunch on defense,” said Gladstone. “It’ll certainly be a shift from what our fans probably saw last year.”

Leading the Jacksonville defense is new defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile. Having coached under Jeff Hafley, Vic Fangio, and Brain Flores, Campanile has operated in several wide-ranging schemes. The impact of that on the Jaguars’ defense is that it will be malleable, able to adjust to the skill sets on the roster as well as to who the opponent is each week.

Scheme is obviously important, but for Campanile, it’s not a top priority. Instead, play-style is what he is going to emphasize early on.

“The most important thing when you talk about defense is your play-style,” said Campanile. “My vision for us defensively, we want to be a tough, fast, physical, violent at the point of attack team.

“What does that mean? That means that you got guys who take pride in not getting blocked. Everybody talks about running to the ball, I don’t think there’s another person in the world who believes in running to the ball more than I do. But you can’t run to the ball if you don’t get off blocks, and that is something that’s going to be celebrated in our room.”

The on-field results weren’t there for the Jaguars in 2024. This was a secondary that was one of the worst pass defenses in football, while the defensive front ranked 32nd in ESPN’s pass rush win rate metric and 27th in run-stop rate.

Additions on both ends will have to be made. However, when it comes to that play-style element, Campanile has liked what he’s seen as he’s poured over the tape, and that gives him quite a bit to work with when it comes to turning this unit around.

“I watched that on the tape when I watched the guys here, I see a lot of that. I see great effort, great strain, and these guys, we’ve got a lot of great people in here. Guys that I’m excited to coach.”
