Eight local teams competing in Class 5A state basketball tournaments; first round of games Wednesday night

A handful of larger schools in the area will start playoff basketball later this week after the Colorado State High School Athletic Association released the Class 5A and 6A boys and girls state tournament brackets Sunday.

The Tribune’s coverage area (most of Weld County, plus Resurrection Christian) doesn’t include any 6A teams, but eight 5A teams — five girls squads and three boys squads — will be in action starting Wednesday.

Unlike smaller classifications, 5A and 6A have no regional tournaments, instead opting for a 40-team state bracket that will culminate on March 15.

Class 1A-4A regional brackets will be released Sunday and the regionals themselves will take place March 7 and March 8. They will lead to a state tournament March 13-15.

The Roosevelt girls are the only returning basketball champion, having won the 5A title in each of their last two season. The Roughriders earned a No. 4 seed after posting a 20-3 record, with losses to Grandview (No. 1 in 6A), Cherry Creek (No. 4 in 6A) and Mullen (No. 6 in 5A). Roosevelt will have to wait until the finals for a potential rematch against Mullen, as they are on opposite sides of the bracket.

Roosevelt will play at 11 a.m. Saturday, hosting the winner of No. 29 Eagle Valley (12-11) and No. 36 Regis Groff (12-11). That game will take place on Wednesday, but no start time is listed.

Windsor — a perennial powerhouse in seemingly every winter sport — is the top-seeded team from the area in both brackets — the girls secured a No. 3 seed and the boys a No. 6.

Windsor girls (19-4) enter the tournament on a 14-game win streak after reaching the Great 8 last season and losing to Roosevelt in the title game the year prior.

This year’s Wizards team haven’t lost since before Christmas — when they dropped a pair to out-of-state teams as part of an early-season tournament. The Wizards only two losses to teams in Colorado are to Cherry Creek and Legend (No. 7 in 6A).

Windsor is awaiting a play-in game to learn its opponent but may host No. 30 Severance. Severance, while still in the tournament field, is having a bit of a down year in its first in 5A after making the 4A second round the past two seasons, and the Great 8 in 2022.

The Silver Knights (7-16) welcome No. 35 Grand Junction Central (7-16) to town at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The winner will play the Wizards on Saturday, but no time has yet been posted.

The Windsor boys (17-6) enter the tournament a No. 6 seed after falling in last year’s championship game to Mesa Ridge. Mesa Ridge (22-1) is the No. 2 seed this year and will await the Wizards in the Great 8 if both teams advance that far.

Windsor will host the winner of No. 27 Pueblo East (16-7) and No. 38 Aurora Central (11-12) at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Pueblo East and Aurora Central face off at 6 p.m. Tuesday with a trip to Windsor on the line.

The Severance boys are the last group to receive a bye and face a play-in team outside the top 24. The eight seed is also important, as Severance will host through at least the Great 8, given the Silver Knights make it that far.

Prior to making the jump to 5A this season, the Silver Knights (18-5) had lost in the second round of the 4A tournament each of the past three years.

They will play Friday, hosting the winner of No. 25 Sand Creek (17-6) and No. 40 Gateway (9-14). That game is slated for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Colorado Springs.

The Northridge girls basketball team is in its fifth straight appearance in the state tournament — and as the No. 16 seed is the lowest-ranked team to host a first-round game and avoid the play-in round. The Grizzlies (15-8) will host No. 17 Canon City (18-5) at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Greeley Central is the last area school to make the 5A tournament — with its girls team qualifying for the second straight season. The Wildcats are a No. 25 seed — the highest seed competing in a play-in game — and will host No. 40 Battle Mountain (10-13) at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
