Poles and Johnson to Speak, Old Friends Find New Coaching Jobs, Stafford and Rodgers Look to Secure One Last Bag, and Other Bears Bullets

It’s Day 51 of the Chicago Bears offseason. How did you celebrate the first day of Fake Spring in Chicago? I went on a 3.5-mile walk. And if today’s schedule falls in my favor, I’ll do it again. But this time, I’ll need a better playlist to accompany me on my travels.

The Bears’ heavy hitters have arrived in Indianapolis for the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine and will be speaking today:

    — Courtney Cronin (@CourtneyRCronin) February 25, 2025 I do not expect Bears General Manager Ryan Poles to say anything earth-shattering. And it isn’t as if Head Coach Ben Johnson is going to give out trade secrets. But these press conferences always have some sprinkling of things worth sharing. Ooh. I wonder if Jonathan Allen will come up as a trade possibility. The Washington Commanders are reportedly allowing the talented defensive tackle to seek a trade his offseason, according to ESPN’s John Keim. Allen, 30, has a pair of Pro Bowl appearances under his belt and is a strong force in the middle of Washington’s defense. But Allen is also an expensive one, which complicates things. OverTheCap has Allen with a $22.47 million cap number in 2025. Cutting Allen would create $16.47 million in cap savings while coming at the cost of just a $6 million dead cap hit. While the Bears could use someone like that on their defensive line, I think the team would be better off addressing needs along the interior defensive line via the draft. This seems to be a good draft to address needs along the defensive line. Several Bears players discuss what they want to be remembered for after their playing careers are over:

    — Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) February 24, 2025 Former Bears coach Matt Nagy joined Adam Rank’s podcast for a visit:

    — The Sick Podcast with Adam Rank (@sickpodadamrank) February 24, 2025 Sean Desai, who was the defensive coordinator in Nagy’s final year in Chicago, has landed with the Cincinnati Bengals as the team’s new senior defensive assistant. I still think Desai got a raw deal in Philly, where he was neutered by the presence of Matt Patricia and eventually axed. In a twist of irony, the Eagles defense was able to get back on track after hiring Desai’s mentor — Vic Fangio. Go figure. (Tom Pelissero via Twitter/X) Speaking of former Bears assistants who coached under Matt Nagy, Chris Tabor is joining the Bills as the team’s special teams coach. Tabor is one of the best in the business, so I’m glad he landed on his feet. Because there are times when the headline is all you need to know, here is this from Pro Football Talk: “Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford look to add to their record career earnings.” There isn’t much left for Rodgers or Stafford to prove at this point in their respective careers. And yet, both still want to play ball. There is a part of me that respects the hustle of bag culture among quarterbacks. But there is also a part of me that is ready to see these guys pass the baton.
