Coco Gauff boasts both a Grand Slam singles and doubles title in her trophy cabinet.
The first was won at the US Open in 2023, before a doubles crown followed at the French Open last year.
And one of the secrets to her success was sitting in her box at Roland Garros as she did it.
That was her former coach, Brad Gilbert, who spent 14 months working with the American between July 2023 and September 2024.
Under Gilbert’s tutelage, Gauff first secured her maiden Grand Slam singles title at Flushing Meadows in September 2023.
Eight months later, she made it through to singles semi-finals at the French Open before losing to eventual champion Iga Swiatek.
Despite that setback, Gauff tasted success in the French Open doubles, winning the tournament alongside Katarina Siniakova.
Her coach could take plenty of credit for that – as the American went on to achieve her career highest ranking of number 2 after the tournament.
Gilbert himself was a handy player, reaching number four in the world and winning bronze at the 1988 Olympics.
However, it is as a coach he has achieved widespread acclaim having worked with some of the greatest players of the last 30 years.
He started working with Andre Agassi in 1994 and was in his box for six of his eight Grand Slam victories.
Agassi once described Gilbert as ‘one of the greatest coaches of all-time’.
Gauff was a Grand Slam champion in both singles and doubles under GilbertGetty Agassi, also coached by Gilbert, enjoyed most of his career success under himAFP Even Andy Murray even worked with the American early in his careerGettyAfter ending his relationship with Agassi, he then helped Andy Roddick to win the US Open in 2003.
Gilbert later started working with Andy Murray in 2006 during his formative years, with the Brit reaching a then career-high of world number eight when they split in 2007.
Roddick pinpointed what makes Gilbert such a good coach to work with, and that in part explains how Gauff elevated her game under him.
“Brad is a genius at taking very complex things and simplifying them, right? ‘We’re gonna focus on these two things out out of the gate, and we’re gonna do it all practice,’” Roddick said.
“Then those things are covered, three days later we’re gonna add in something else. He’s very good at layering in information and kinda simplifying (the) game plan, he’s a master strategist.
“There will be no shot that any one of the opponents is gonna hit. Now there’s what they hit sometimes and what they hit under pressure, and he’s very good at finding the differentiators between those two because they’re not always the same.
Gauff won the US Open last year with the help of GilbertGettyGauff’s game undoubtedly jumped levels during her time working with Gilbert, with her forehand weakness in her earlier career shored up.
But come September 2024, the pair split, just two weeks after what Gauff described as a “disappointing” US Open title defence.
She lost in the fourth round to fellow American Emma Navarro last year.
“Coco, at just 20 years young, your future is incredibly bright, and I wish you nothing but continued success ahead,” Gilbert said at the time.
“I’m excited for the next chapter in my coaching career.”
While that next coaching step is yet to be confirmed, Gilbert’s skills have also caught the eye of Hollywood in recent years.
He was tasked with helping Zendaya with lessons for the 2024 hit film Challengers, and making things as authentic as possible.
“They put it in the hard yards,” Gilbert said, per People. “The focus that actors and tennis players have is similar.”

Now working with Matt Daly and Jean-Christophe Faurel, she won the season-ending 2024 WTA Finals in November.
Then, to begin this year, Gauff participated in the United Cup, where the United States team won the title against Poland.
In the final, she defeated world No. 2, Iga Swiatek in straight sets, and was undefeated across the tournament.
Gauff has made a mixed start to 2025 after WTA Finals success last NovemberGETTYBut at the first Grand Slam of 2025, the Australian Open in January, she crashed out in the quarterfinals.
With her attentions turning to clay, she will be looking to go deep at Roland Garros, after losing the final of the Italian Open to Jasmine Paolini earlier this month.
Gauff begins her French Open run against Olivia Gadecki on Tuesday.
