Jane Fonda raised eyebrows on the red carpet of the 2025 SAG Awards, as her dialogue with host Lilly Singh was stilted, filled with pauses, and generally awkward. On the other hand, when she accepted the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award, the two-time Oscar winner was filled with confidence, vim and vigor. The production team behind the scenes, however, were not.

After a lengthy montage highlighting the 87-year-old's decades-long career, she arrived onto stage to a standing ovation from everyone in attendance. As she began to speak, she made a smooth aside, bellowing, "What about the sound system? I’m gonna talk loud!"
At the time, nobody watching knew what to make of her comment. But little did we know that her speech would be plagued with a number of audio errors.
"I have had a really weird career," Fonda reflected. "Totally not — as my agents there at that table will testify to — totally unstrategic."
Unfortunately, the Grace and Frankie star's words were totally pushed aside by a sudden perturbing series of noises. While Fonda plowed through her speech admirably, all viewers could focus on were the strange sounds, pulling away from her meaningful — and incredibly important — speech.
"What’s happening with this sound system during Jane Fonda’s speech is embarrassing," one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
"What is that dentist office sound going on while Jane Fonda is speaking?" another commented.

But the most disturbing was yet to come. After the noises subsided, Fonda's speech turned political, as she talked about the importance of both unions and the key talent of actors: Empathy.
"Our job is to understand another human being so profoundly that we can touch their souls," she said. "We know why they do what they do."
She was then interrupted by a pre-recorded announcer's voice. It echoed, "Here at the 31st–" before being quickly cut off.

Without missing a beat, Fonda replied, "And I can conjure up voices!" Her response received a rapturous ovation.
Luckily, that seemed to be the last of the technical difficulties of the speech. Fonda was able to bring her remarks home, commenting on the importance of standing up for what is right more than ever, and comparing Hollywood today to how it stood up against the government during McCarthyism in the 1950s. Regardless of what sounds were associated with Fonda's speech, she was able to push through and finish strong with the professionalism that has made her one of the most admired actresses working today.
