Jaguars Tony Boselli highlights what Liam Coen will emphasize this offseason

There are a couple big tasks on the plate of new Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen. This includes altering the team culture, and getting quarterback Trevor Lawrence back on track.

But, in addition to all of that, when it comes to the Jaguars’ personnel, and what Coen believes the team has to emphasize moving forward, it all starts at the line of scrimmage and in the trenches.

On a recent appearance on SiriusXM NFL radio, Jaguars’ Executive VP Tony Boselli highlighted what stood out about Coen in his interview and what the new head coach plans to prioritize from Day 1.

“I don’t know how many people know this,” Boselli said, “but Liam Coen is a believer in the run game. What just came off the page with him for me was, we’re just sitting there talking in the interview, and his main focus–we talked about Trevor obviously and the quarterback–but his main focus is the offensive line–line of scrimmage.

“He says listen, we have to get the O-line right. If you can’t control the line of scrimmage, if you can’t run it, and you can’t protect, you can’t win.”

“We believe that we have a franchise quarterback in Trevor Lawrence, I’ll pound the table for that one.”@TonyBoselli discussed how he’s excited about HC Liam Coen and QB Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville.

We all know how important time in the pocket is for any quarterback when it comes to the passing game. But a big part of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ overall success last season with Coen as the offensive coordinator was their ability to run the ball.

When an offense has a strong running game to lean on, it keeps them out of predictable passing situations and in manageable down and distances. From there, the entire playbook opens up as do opportunities in the passing game.

As Lawrence has gotten to know Coen and learn his offense, he said recently that what stands out the most about it, is the run game element.

During his introductory press conference, Coen was to the point in saying that the Jaguars’ offensive line play has to improve this season. So whether it be free agency, the draft, or both, that position group is going to be one we perhaps not only see the Jaguars address, but do so quite heavily.

The good news for Jacksonville is that in one season, the Bucs went from being one of the worst rushing offenses in football to one of the best under Coen.

This ability to control the line of scrimmage isn’t only on the offensive side of the ball either, but it pertains to the defensive line as well. “We gotta get the D-line right,” Coen added.

In 2024, the Jaguars’ defensive front ranked 32 in ESPN’s pass-rush win rate metric and 27th in run-stop rate.

“That’s where it starts,” said Coen of the trenches in his first press conference. “To go win playoff games and to go and do it, you’ve got to be able to run the football and stop the run, first and foremost.”
