Robert De Niro offered some candid remarks about being nominated for awards at the Oscars during a recent talk show appearance.
The two-time Academy Award winner, who has been nominated for nine Oscars over the course of his decades-long career, is not in the running for a trophy at this year’s ceremony, which will take place on Sunday, March 2, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Calif.

However, the Taxi Driver star was seated near actress Mikey Madison when he stopped by BBC’s The Graham Norton Show earlier this month. Madison is nominated at this year’s awards show in the Best Actress category for her role in Anora. The Oscar nomination is her first.
Talk show host and comedian Graham Norton inquired whether De Niro, 81, had any advice to share for Madison, 25, ahead of next week’s ceremony. “Looking back, are there things you wish you’d known about going to the Oscars, or being involved in the Oscars, that you could share with Mikey Madison?” Norton asked.
“No,” De Niro said bluntly, a joke that got a laugh out of Madison and the show’s live audience.

Norton went along with the joke, telling De Niro, “OK. Fair enough.” He then turned to Madison and teased, “Do you need a pen, Mikey?”
Norton turned back to the Goodfellas star to ask a more specific question. “Prepare a speech, or no?”
“Well, you know, if you prepare one, you prepare it, you’re probably definitely not gonna win,” De Niro said, a remark that prompted another wave of laughter from the audience. “And, you know, if it’s spontaneous, that’s a good thing,” he added.
De Niro then offered a sweet message about Oscar nominations that made Madison smile. “The one thing is that, if you’re nominated, that’s—you already won,” he declared.
De Niro was most recently nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Supporting Actor category at the 2024 Oscars for his role in Killers of the Flower Moon. He first won in that same category in 1975 for The Godfather Part II and, six years later, won his Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Raging Bull.
