Cubs vs Rangers — The Cubs are undefeated through three Spring Training contests so far, and they’ve got a lineup with five Opening Day starters up top.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
Ian Happ, LF Kyle Tucker, DH Seiya Suzuki, RF Dansby Swanson, SS Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Vidal Brujan, 2B Jonathan Long, 1B Carlos Perez, C BJ Murray Jr., 3BIn fact, the top three of this Cubs lineup is what you should expect to see on Opening Day (and for most of the season, god willing). I think Michael Busch, who’s not playing today, will likely bat cleanup, with Dansby Swanson down to fifth, potentially followed by Nico Hoerner. And that’s how it should probably go until one of Pete Crow-Armstrong or Matt Shaw demonstrates that they can live up to their offensive capabilities.
But as the season goes on, I wouldn’t be surprised if either one of those youngsters slots in closer to the middle of the order than the bottom.
Vidal Brujan is sure getting a lot of run. Today, he’s again at second base, but he also made an appearance in center field against the Dodgers.
Of course, the biggest news of the day is our first look at Kyle Tucker!
The Cubs’ big offseason addition is slow-playing his Spring Training ramp-up, as Craig Counsell indicated he would, getting into his first action today as the DH. I am very much excited to tune in for his first (un)official at-bats as a Cub.
Texas Rangers Lineup:
Marcus Semien, 2B Corey Seager, SS Jake Burger, DH Jace Jung, 3B Tucker Barnhart, C Sam Haggerty, LF Ezequiel Duran, 1B Leody Taveras, CF Alejandro Osuna, RFPitching Matchup: Cubs vs Rangers
Chicago Cubs: Colin Rea, RHP
Earlier today, Brett discussed Colin Rea’s scheduled start, and I think summed it up rather succinctly:
The Cubs will send out Colin Rea today for his first start of the spring, and I think it’s safe to assume he’ll keep getting stretched out as a starter throughout camp regardless of the rest of the rotation. Not only did he mostly start the last couple years with the Brewers, but (1) he seems to have the ability to pretty quickly adjust to a long relief role in the bullpen if needed, and (2) I still can’t shake the feeling that the Cubs will be doing some non-traditional things with their rotation group this year. I’m not saying exactly a six-man, and I’m not saying exactly that it’ll be piggybacks, but something. And something that might be aided by having six+ guys fully stretched out come the first week of the season.
Nominally, though, Rea is competing with Jordan Wicks and Ben Brown (and Brad Keller?) for the 5th starter job while Javier Assad is out.
Texas Rangers: Cody Bradford, LHP
