CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — A rally took place on Saturday in Canandaigua to honor Sam Nordquist, a transgender man who was murdered. His body was discovered in a field in Yates County last week.

Police have arrested and charged seven people in connection with Sam’s murder. Among those charged are his girlfriend, Precious Arzuaga, whom he met online and visited in September, and Arzuaga’s son, 21-year-old Thomas Eaves.

The Canandaigua community gathered to grieve, express their anger, and demand justice for Sam. Erica McCarthy, a protestor, emphasized the importance of support and visibility, stating, “We need to be heard. It needs to be seen that trans hatred is unacceptable.”

Another protestor, Ryan, said, “I found out he was missing first on like Monday or Tuesday of that week before he was found. I started sharing the posts trying to see if we could find out where Sam was.”

Sam’s sister, Kayla Nordquist, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support. “It does warm my heart that so many people around the world are thinking about Sam, talking about Sam, and saying Sam’s name,” she said.

While police continue to investigate the murder, they have stated that it is not being classified as a hate crime.
