Lynne Marie Stewart, Pee-wees Playhouse Star, Dead at 78

Actress Lynne Marie Stewart, who was best known to audiences for her roles in television shows like Pee-wee’s Playhouse and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, reportedly died at 78.

Stewart’s friend, actress Cassandra “Elvira” Peterson, shared the news on social media, writing in part, “My heart is breaking upon hearing the news.”

    She continued, speaking fondly of her friend as she wrote, “One of the kindest, sweetest, funniest women who ever lived. The iconic Miss Yvonne of Pee-wee’s Playhouse. She’ll always be ‘the most beautiful woman in Puppetland,’” alongside a photo of her and her partner, Teresa “T” Wierson, embracing Stewart. The actress appeared in Peterson’s 1988 film Elvira: Mistress of the Dark.

    Parade reached out to Stewart’s reps for comment but did not immediately hear back.

    In addition to playing Miss Yvonne, The Most Beautiful Woman in Puppetland, on Pee-wee’s Playhouse from 1986 to 1990, Stewart appeared in several Pee-wee Herman movies, including 1985’s Pee-wee's Big Adventure and 1988’s Big Top Pee-wee.

    Per Extra, she met Paul Reubens, who created the series and played the title character, in the 1970s through Los Angeles comedy troupe the Groundlings.

    Stewart was born on Dec. 14, 1946 and made her film debut in Drive, He Said, a 1971 film directed by Jack Nicholson. She had 149 acting credits to her name according to IMDb, from stints on her best friend Cindy Williams' sitcom Laverne & Shirley to her heartbreakingly funny portrayal of Charlie Kelly’s mother, Bonnie Kelly, on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

    Actress Mary Elizabeth Ellis, a frequent guest star on Always Sunny and wife of Charlie Day, who portrays Charlie Kelly on the show, took to social media to express her grief. “This woman. So lovely, so funny…I can’t believe I got to know and work with her after falling for her as a child watching Peewee. Lots of love to you Lynne Marie ?,” she wrote on her Instagram Story.
