Leadership, 4 Nations Ratings, a Russian Rumor, Prospect Highlights, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

A quick housekeeping thought: Seth Jones talked to the media about his trade request yesterday. Even though he’s saying all of the right things about trying hard and playing for the Blackhawks (until he’s traded), teams will healthy scratch guys until they’re traded to keep them healthy. I am not advocating for that.

However, I would prefer the A was removed from Jones’ chest and permanently put on Jason Dickinson when he returns. I wouldn’t be against an A being put on Alex Vlasic while we’re at it. Jones made it pretty clear on Friday that he’ll work hard as long as the checks are coming from the Wirtz family but he wants out.

When you say you prefer to play somewhere else, you’re no longer entitled to inclusion in any kind of leadership group.

Hey, there’s an actual Blackhawks game tonight! How about it! They’re in Columbus tonight before hosting Toronto tomorrow evening. After all of the excitement around the game generated by the 4 Nations Face-Off, I’m on board with a matchup featuring Connor Bedard and Adam Fantilli to kick start the stretch run for the Blackhawks. Let’s go! Speaking of Fantilli, Frank Nazar will be one of a handful of former Michigan Wolverines on the ice in Columbus, Ohio. Zach Werenski, who just became the first US defenseman to lead an international tournament in scoring, and Kent Johnson are also Michigan Men. We got the TV numbers for the finale of the 4 Nations Face-Off on Friday and holy **** that’s a lot of people! HUGE numbers!

    — NHL Public Relations (@PR_NHL) February 21, 2025 Bedard was like the millions of others who enjoyed watching the 4 Nations Face-Off as a fan. Here’s hoping he plays himself into a position to be considered for the 2026 Winter Olympics. He’s obviously been incredible playing for Canada in previous international tournaments but we saw how ridiculously stacked their roster was for this tournament and I’m not sure how many of those guys are going away between now and this time next year.

Connor Bedard loved watching Canada's victory last night. And next year, there's a good chance he'll be playing in the 2026 Olympics."If anyone gets that opportunity, they would be over the moon. And obviously, I would be myself."New story: t.co/boW8FldZi3

    — Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) February 21, 2025 Unfortunately Louis Crevier can’t catch a break. He was ready to return from concussion protocol today. Interim head coach Anders Sorensen said he needed stitches and should be okay, but we’ll have to see if he’s good to go after leaving practice yesterday. Pucks to the head when coming back from a concussion is far from ideal.

Louis Crevier just got hit in the jaw or neck by a puck. He left practice immediately…

    — Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) February 21, 2025 A report surfaced last night of interest for Blackhawks fans. Daria Tuboltseva of RG Media wrote that Ilya Safonov (stats) plans on leaving the KHL and signing with the Blackhawks after the 2024-25 season ends. In the story, Tuboltseva writes that Safonov’s agent has not confirmed the information sources shared with her. Scott Powers tweeted last night that he had a source deny the report. My two cents: I haven’t reached out to the player’s representation or any sources on the subject, so I’m not going to front like the player’s agent did not confirm and/or denied anything to me personally. And I had not previously heard of Tuboltseva so I can’t provide any support for where the report started. Safonov’s contract in the KHL does expire at the end of May and there have been reports previously that the Blackhawks could be interested in signing the big (6-4, 205) center if/when he becomes available. The Blackhawks have a lot of players in college and junior with contracts potentially coming this offseason and I’m not as sold on the Hawks desperately needing him at this point as I might have been 12-24 months ago. But we’ll see. Blackhawks legend Kevin Lankinen has been really good for the Canucks this season while they wait for Thatcher Demko to get healthy (which he hasn’t yet). Which is why, on Friday, the Canucks rewarded Lankinen with a five-year extension that carries both a $4.5M cap hit and a no-move clause in the first two years and a 15-team no-trade list in the last three seasons. We’ll see what this means for Demko, who has one more year at a $5M cap hit on his deal.

Hey how about some Blackhawks prospect highlights?

A couple notes before we get some clips. First, Nick Lardis did not score a goal last night. I know, right? What the hell?!? I’m kidding of course. His heater was incredible and he’s still at 60 goals and 99 points on the season. Aidan Thompson had two assists in Denver’s 5-1 win at Miami (Ohio) last night. The first apple gave him 100 career points for the Pioneers. Congrats! How about an AHL goal to kick things off? Artyom Levshunov scored for the IceHogs last night.

    — Rockford IceHogs (@goicehogs) February 22, 2025 Good note here from Scott Wheeler on Levshunov (I will remind everyone that he missed all of training camp and the start of the regular season because of the foot injury).

Arty Levshunov since Jan. 31: 9GP, 3G, 6A, 9PTS, +2Now up to 20 points and 125 shots in 45 games as a teenaged rookie D in the AHL.For reference, Moritz Seider had 22 points and 84 shots in 49 AHL games post-draft in Grand Rapids and then played in the SHL the following year.

    — Scott Wheeler (@scottcwheeler) February 22, 2025 Alex Pharand had two more assists as Sudbury beat Owen Sound 8-1. In the college ranks, Minnesota kicked off the penultimate weekend of the Big Ten regular season with a good 4-1 win over Ohio State. Sam Rinzel put three shots on goal and blocked one shot. Oliver Moore won 8 of 13 faceoffs, put three shots on net and scored this goal into the empty net to seal the deal.

    — Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) February 22, 2025 Finally, we had some Blackhawks prospect on Blackhawks prospect crime last night. North Dakota beat Minnesota-Duluth 4-2. Dominic James had an assist on the Bulldog’s second goal of the night. The game-winning goal for UND came from Sacha Boisvert (with Adam Gajan in net). You might note the song they play when he scores… love to hear it.
