A Small Red Flag Has Popped Up on Trey Smith’s Profile

One analyst says “buyer beware” when it comes to Kansas City Chiefs guard Trey Smith.

Smith, who is not expected to be given the Franchise Tag and is on the cusp of making it to the open market, is widely viewed as a Chicago Bears target in free agency. Should Trey Smith become a free agent, he is expected to reset the market among guards. And rightfully so, I might add. Smith is a four-year starter and is coming off his best year with the Chiefs, earning Pro Bowl honors for his efforts in K.C. in 2024.

However, one pundit offers up a reason to show caution when it comes to pursuing Trey Smith in free agency:

Based on where you find his name on the graphic above, Trey Smith’s pass-blocking leaves something to be desired. In other words, even the best offensive line free-agent option has flaws. Hey, nobody’s perfect.

Should we be worried about Trey Smith’s pass blocking?

Steven Patton’s graphic above isn’t the only piece of evidence suggesting that we look deeper into Trey Smith’s pass protection issues. Pro Football Focus gave Smith a 70.6 pass-blocking grade in 2024, which ranked 33rd among the 135 guards who qualified for inclusion on that leaderboard. To give that some additional perspective, according to PFF’s data, Teven Jenkins — the Bears’ primary starter at left guard last season — posted a 75.8 pass-blocking grade last year. That number ranked 15th among 135 guards.

Smith still finished with the 14th-best overall grade, for what it’s worth. So it’s not as if the middling grade in pass protection was an anchor that weighed down his overall marks. And it’s not as if his pass blocking is something that would take him off my radar as a fit for the Bears this offseason. But it is still something to consider in the grand scheme of things.

If the pass protection grades are a deal-breaker for the Bears, perhaps the team could consider alternate options. For instance, Brandon Scherff’s 74.5 PFF pass block grade was 19th among 135 guards. And while I wouldn’t recommend running it back with Matt Pryor as an unquestioned starter at right guard, it is worth noting that Pryor’s 78.1 pass block grade at Pro Football Focus was the eighth-best among guards. Perhaps the Bears can retain him on a modest deal to keep him around as a swing lineman.

In the end, the Trey Smith pass-blocking numbers will not scare me off. You will have to work harder than that to move me off my stance of wanting the Bears to kick the tires on Smith if he hits free agency. However, Patton’s analytics led me to do some deeper diving into the free-agent-to-be. I don’t think it’ll be the last time we comb through Smith’s numbers.
