There are several unknowns about playing Belichick Ball.

The proclaimed “greatest coach of all time” has a system that earned nine trips to the Super Bowl with the New England Patriots, six championships and three last-minute losses.

Belichick believes college football has evolved into more like the NFL when he took over the Pats in 2000, assuming complete control of the franchise from the front office to the draft room to the sideline. His success was largely due to uncanny evaluation skills by him and his staff.

Dollar Bill recognized small-college stars who had the talent to flourish in the pros, perhaps with a position change. Julian Edelman, a quarterback at San Mateo College and Kent State, became a three-time Super Bowl champion and MVP of the sterling comeback win over the Falcons in 2019.

He had plenty of videos to watch on Edelman, who turned into a slot receiver and punt returner in New England. No one with the team was surprised that the 5-10 athlete developed into an all-pro, least not Belichick.

As a new college coach, he’ll have less time than competitors to evaluate high school talent and transfer portal players who left their former colleges because they wanted more PT. Even after having signed such players, Belichick needs scouting reports and spring practice to know for sure.

If these kids need strength training and more coaching to play in Division 1, they will likely end up on his version of taxi squads, where some NFL players start and work their way up to the 53-man rosters. In college, they generally serve as practice fodder to prepare the two-deeps.

Belichick says he and general manager Mike Lombardi and their staff will have enough time to determine who can play on Labor Day against TCU on ESPN. If there aren’t enough, the transfer portal will have closed by then. And most prep stars are not physically ready for major college football.

The other great unknown about Hoodie is whether he will be happy with a basically 12-month job of college football. When NFL seasons end and the draft is over, coaches usually have a couple of months off to vacation with their families. In Belichick’s case, that has been to head for Nantucket and spend down time on his boat named “6 Rings.” He has changed the numerical name with every Super Bowl he won.

Since Belichick will run the UNC program top to bottom, he will have to find out if he can take enough time off in May and June for Nantucket. He can do whatever he pleases but surely won’t want to go boating with a guilty conscience. After all, he is making $10 million a year.

Organizing a program and imparting his wisdom on coaches and players, he is rich with experience. But will there be enough talent and time for the 72-year-old future Hall of Famer to find success his way?
