The New York Yankees have, at least, realized that their facial hair policy was archaic and have opted for a new rule within the clubhouse.
After upholding perhaps the strangest policy in American professional sports for far longer than anyone could have anticipated, the Yankees decided that it was finally time to look at the calendar and realize the year was 2025 and that players should (mostly) present however they wish.
Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner released a statement explaining that they have made an alteration to their aesthetic rules:
“In recent weeks I have spoken to a large number of former and current Yankees – spanning several eras — to elicit their perspectives on our longstanding facial hair and grooming policy, and l appreciate their earnest and varied feedback. These most recent conversations are an extension of ongoing internal dialogue that dates back several years. Ultimately the final decision rests with me, and after great consideration, we will be amending our expectations to allow our players and uniformed personnel to have well-groomed beards moving forward. It is the appropriate time to move beyond the familiar comfort of our former policy.”
The decision to allow “well-groomed beards” is perhaps too little, too late for something that should have probably changed decades ago.
But it is at least a step in the right direction toward modernity for a team that desperately needed to re-evaluate a policy that was weirdly enforced and was somehow stricter and militant than it ever should have been.
The choice also comes shortly after former Yankees players such as Gleyber Torres (now on the Tigers) and Gerrit Cole (now on the Astros) immediately grew beards on their new team.
Meanwhile, recent Yankees additions like reliever Devin Williams have already had to shave their facial hair for spring training. Fortunately, they are now permitted to grow it back and return to looking how they chose to look.
