KFC is leaving Kentucky for Texas, and fans everywhere are scratching their heads in confusion. The popular fried chicken chain is picking up its headquarters and moving everything to Plano, Texas, where a low corporate tax is becoming more and more attractive to corporate business owners. Big brands like Chevron, Tesla and Amazon have already jumped onto the trend, so it only makes sense that more businesses would eventually follow suit.

In a statement released on Tuesday, February 18, Yum! Brands CEO David Gibbs referred to the move as a way to “position us for sustainable growth” and “help us better serve our customers, employees, franchisees and shareholders.” And while KFC did try to save face by donating $1 million to the University of Louisville’s College of Business, local fans are still pretty disappointed to hear the news.
“I am disappointed by this decision and believe the company’s founder would be, too,” Governor Andy Beshear suggested in a statement.

The official statement from Yum! Brands describes the decision as a strategic move that “will involve relocating KFC U.S. corporate office employees currently in Louisville, Kentucky, to the KFC and Pizza Hut Global headquarters in Plano, Texas.” In addition, all “U.S.-based remote employees will be asked to relocate to the campus where their work happens.” Yum! Brands and the KFC Foundation are expected to maintain corporate offices in Louisville while Taco Bell and Habit Burger & Grill will remain headquartered in Irvine, California.
Most people would likely agree with the sentiment shared by Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg, who said that the brand “was born here and is synonymous with Kentucky.” And while these changes will certainly shake things up for employees who are expected to make the move along with KFC, Gibbs firmly believes that “Bringing more of our people together on a consistent basis will maximize our unrivaled culture and talent as a competitive advantage."

Here’s hoping things will improve for KFC as a whole once this move is said and done. Speaking for most fans, we just don’t want to see a rise in menu prices or an undesired change to the chicken recipe. So long as the brand keeps dulling out the fried chicken we love, we’ll continue to visit the colonel without complaint.
