The San Antonio Spurs have announced that star Victor Wembanyama will miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season.
According to the team’s statement, the second-year big man has been diagnosed with a deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. The Mayo Clinic labels this as a blood clot that forms in one or more deep veins in the body. The Spurs discovered the issue following Wembanyama’s return from San Francisco where he competed in his first-ever All-Stat Game.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that San Antonio believes this is an “isolated” condition.

As the Spurs lose Victor Wembanyama for the season, they sit with a 23-29 record and 12th in the Western Conference. They are 3.5 games out of the No. 10 seed and final Play-In Tournament spot. To secure that postseason appearance, they will have to outperform both the Warriors and Suns down the stretch. While pulling that off isn’t out of the question, there is no doubt the odds are now stacked against them.
The news also comes after San Antonio acquired point guard De’Aaron Fox ahead of the NBA trade deadline. After playing in only five games together, the former Sacramento Kings star will have to wait until the 2025-26 campaign to continue building chemistry with his new running mate.
All things considered, this injury could end up having a significant impact on the upcoming lottery odds. Whether it be intentionally or not, the Spurs may very easily begin to slip further down the NBA standings. They currently hold the 10th-best odds at the No. 1 overall pick but have only a 1.5-game advantage over the Trail Blazers and a 2.5-game advantage over the Chicago Bulls.
Every percentage point matters when we’re talking about a higher draft pick. Especially if you’re a team like the Chicago Bulls, who recently traded away its best player to pursue a youth movement, the last thing you want is for your odds to trend in the wrong direction.
