With the offseason in full swing, the Cleveland Browns are looking to build on their recent success by targeting key free agents who can help push them deeper into the playoffs. From bolstering the offensive line to adding defensive playmakers, here are the top five free agents the Browns should pursue to strengthen their roster for the upcoming season.

We’re starting this one with a bit of a hypothetical, but one that would be a considerable victory for Cleveland’s immediate future if things shake out this way. With Michael Penix Jr. now the starting quarterback in Atlanta, there’s a good chance that Kirk Cousins will be released before he’s due a $10 million roster bonus in March, making him a free agent. Deshaun Watson is—for all intents and purposes—done in Cleveland. Kirk Cousins reuniting with Kevin Stefanski makes sense for Cleveland and gives them a serviceable bridge at quarterback.
Cleveland has the second pick in the NFL Draft, so they’ll be able to select a quarterback in April. Cousins can serve in the same capacity he did with Atlanta last season, giving the Browns time to develop their quarterback of the future.
2. Sam Darnold — QB, Minnesota Vikings
If Cousins doesn’t come to fruition, Sam Darnold could be an option for Cleveland, allowing them to use that second-overall pick elsewhere. If the Browns believe that Darnold can replicate his success in Minnesota, the 27-year-old quarterback could be their long-term option under center, allowing them to use the second overall pick in the draft on a dynamic player like Travis Hunter, who would provide the necessary secondary reinforcement, or Abdul Carter, who could replace Myles Garrett if they trade him. This is a much better bang-for-your-buck scenario for the Browns, but it comes with some risk that Darnold turns back into a pumpkin away from Kevin O’Connell.

Cleveland needs to reinforce its secondary, providing Denzel Ward with a complementary cornerback. Chavarious Ward could be a solid bounce-back candidate after struggling with the 49ers in 2024. According to PFF’s grading system, Ward was a top-10 cornerback in each of the previous two seasons. With Deommodore Lenoir receiving an extension from the 49ers last season, Ward looks to be on the way out. He could be a significant upgrade for the Browns secondary if he can return to his 2023 form.
4. Josh Sweat — EDGE, Philadelphia Eagles
Cleveland has insisted they aren’t interested in honoring Myles Garrett’s trade request, but if that doesn’t pan out, Josh Sweat is a long-term option at 28 years old that could help Cleveland bolster their pass rush and serve as a long-term building block for that unit. Sweat was a steady producer in Philadelphia under multiple defensive coordinators and was a wrecking ball for the Eagles in their Super Bowl victory over the Kansas City Chiefs earlier this month.
5. Khalil Mack — EDGE, Los Angeles Chargers
Regardless of how the Myles Garrett saga plays out, the Browns need another pass rusher opposite Garrett’s spot. Veteran Khalil Mack is a perfect bridge option for Cleveland after turning in back-to-back tremendous seasons with the Chargers under two different coaching staffs.
