Apple TV+ Shares First Look at Alexander Skarsgårds New Show, Murderbot

Sci-fi meets Skarsgård in Murderbot! Emmy Award winner Alexander Skarsgård is returning to the small screen — and this time around, he's playing an android.

Discussing Murderbot with GQ in 2024, the Big Little Lies actor shared, "I play an android who has hacked his system so he’s got — or it’s got — free will, and it’s talking about going on these crazy adventures, but instead it’s watching soap operas."

Apple TV+ announced in 2023 that it was expanding its slate with the series from Academy Award nominees Chris and Paul Weitz. Skarsgård not only stars in the comedic thriller, but is also an executive producer alongside the Weitz brothers.

From the cast to the release date, here is everything to know about Murderbot.

According to Apple TV+, Murderbot is "about a self-hacking security construct who is horrified by human emotion yet drawn to its vulnerable clients. The Apple TV+ show is based on Martha Wells' bestselling book series The Murderbot Diaries. The author, who served as a consulting producer, has previously admitted that she's "really happy with how" the show turned out.

During an "Author Talk" with the City of Mountain View Public Library, Wells said, "With Murderbot, it's very difficult to keep it close to the book because it's a first-person narrative that's very internal and, especially later on, in the later volumes, a lot of stuff just happens inside software, so you have to take that and make it basically, you know, three-dimensional visual and so the story does have to change and we talked about it throughout what the changes would look like."
