In the most recent show you heard some of the reasons folks have shared with me for why they don’t consider themselves creative. While I certainly love helping folks become more creative and entrepreneurial I love it even more when folks convinced they aren’t creative tell me they now realize they are. Huzzah!

Some of the most frequent labels folks apply to themselves include:

I’m not artistic. This was more common 20 years ago than it is today, but I still hear it occasionally. Folks are conflating artistic with creative and if they aren’t writing poems or painting pictures they figure they aren’t creative. When reminded that problem solving, seeing possibility, being generous with friendships, are all creative expressions they are quick, even eager, to embrace the inclusive view.

I’m too logical. These folks figure creativity is too messy, not structured enough, for their temperament. There is a quality of intelligence social scientist label ‘Fluid Intelligence’ and one of it’s measures is how quickly a person can determine the logic of a new situation. Wow, that’s a great creative accomplishment. And it takes logic to connect the right existing ideas to form a better solution or opportunity.

I’m not imaginative. Do you dream? That’s your imagination helping you work things out or just entertaining you. Two wide awake examples of imagination include seeing one thing and thinking of another unrelated thing. You see a pond, the water makes you think of wine, that makes you imagine a wine glass. Or you see an object but experience qualities of that object that aren’t present. Perhaps you can see someone peeling an orange across the room, too far to smell its deliciousness but you imagine you can.

I am too analytical. Studying data, looking for patterns, looking for anomalies in the patterns, wondering what’s causing the unexpected, that’s a very creative process.

We are all born with remarkable creative qualities and I urge you to take a moment and consider the importance of developing them to prep for our future of unknowns.

“Exploring Your Creative Genius” takes an expansive view on what it means to be creative and entrepreneurial in an ongoing conversation led by Carl Nordgren — entrepreneur, novelist, and lifelong student with decades of experience growing his own creative capacity and assisting others to do the same in exciting new ways!
