Erivo shared the news on her Instagram Stories on Feb. 18, writing, "Just a little busy this Summer. ? Can't wait!!"

Jesus Christ Superstar is a rock opera all about the final days of Jesus Christ, with a lot of the story told from Judas' perspective. It features music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice.

This won't be Erivo's first project with the musical, as she took on the role of Mary Magdalene for the 2020 two-volume all-female concept album titled Jesus Christ Superstar: She Is Risen. Singer and actress Morgan James played Jesus on the album.

News platform Pop Base also announced Erivo's casting on X, leading fans to share their thoughts in the comments.

Many cheered on the Wicked star for the casting, writing messages like, "Cynthia Erivo is really one of one ????," "oh werk," and "Amen ?."

"Y’all are not ready for a Jesus with vocals like that," someone else penned.

"Nothing like this line has ever been written in mankind's history and honestly I love that for our history-making, gravity-defying goddess queen," said another fan, while others called her "genius" and "such a marvellous choice."

But there were also people who took issue with the casting choice and voiced their discontent in the comments, such as one who wrote, "This needs to stop."

"I’m sorry what," asked another, as others wrote, "I love you Cynthia but please hit the Decline button," "had to check the @ to make sure this wasn't a prank," and "blasphemy."

The discourse continued with people on both sides of the argument. Erivo has not commented on the backlash she's receiving from some.
