PATRICK Mahomes was seen attending his grandfather’s funeral in Texas on Monday.
Just days after losing in the Super Bowl, Mahomes is now grappling with the death of a loved one.
Randy, the father of Mahomes’ mother Randi, died on Friday at the age of 78.
He was battling an unknown illness in recent months.
Randy died just five days after the Kansas City Chiefs suffered their defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX.
Patrick Mahomes traveled to Henderson, Texas, on Monday to attend the funeral alongside members of his family.
Randi announced the death of her father alongside a series of photos on Monday.
“Hard to find the words of holding my fathers hand as he goes to Heaven,” she wrote..
“I know he’s in a better place. I love you daddy. Well done, good and faithful servant”
Randi was vocal about her father’s health battles on social media, but never detailed what he was suffering from.
He turned 78 last month, and Randi said that he was “hanging on” to see Mahomes play in the Super Bowl.
“I know that it has meant a lot to him,” Randi told PEOPLE.
“And I think he’s hanging on because he wants to see his grandson do an amazing thing or just let him play.
“I mean, he must be such a proud grandpa, so proud. And my mom was very proud and his other grandparents.”
Randi said that Mahomes was kept updated about his grandfather’s health, but she didn’t want to bother him too much.
Even though her father was moved into hospice care, Randi was able to watch both the AFC Championship and Super Bowl in person.
It has been an emotional few weeks for Mahomes, who went from the birth of his third child, to losing the Super Bowl, to the death of his grandfather.
