Pair of beloved car dealerships changing hands after owner decides to retire – but 200 employees are left in limbo

THE fate of two much-loved dealerships is up in the air with their owner set to retire – and it could spell bad news for some 200 employees.

Elk Grove’s Nissan and Mazda dealerships, located in Sacramento, California, are closing their doors at the end of March.

A custom detailing shop and oil change service, also owned by the same umbrella company, Sacramento Motorcars LLC, is to shut up shop with them.

According to a report in the Sacramento Bee, Sacramento Motorcars filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) with state Employment Development Department officials on February 4.

Part of the WARN Act requires employers to give their employees 60 days’ notice before a mass layoff or relocation.

A total of 199 employees are currently working for the firm, including 146 at the two showrooms at 8440 Auto Passage Drive and 8588 Laguna Grove Drive.

There are also 43 employees at Elk Grove Custom Collision, a collision repair and detailing shop, as well as 10 workers at an affiliated Quik Lube at 8588 Laguna Grove Drive, Suite B.

The dealerships, owned by John and Christina Driebe, are set to be sold off to DriveFamilyFirst LLC, according to the filing.

In a letter to state employment officials, John said workers could possibly be rehired by the new owners.

John, who has been working in the auto industry in the city for 44 years, is set to retire.

At the time of the announcement, he wrote: “We anticipate that the purchasing entity will continue to operate an automotive dealership at the same location and hire most, if not all, of the current employees; however, that is a decision to be made between the purchasing entity and individual employees.

“All positions and classifications will be affected by this closure, and all employees will be laid off on March 31.”

In an update, Driebe stated that the facilities and the dealerships “will look the same” under the new ownership.

In a social media post, one user who claimed to work at one of the locations added: “One of the co-owners is just retiring.

“Just a rebranding of the name that’s all. Same staff and management. Just a simple rebrand.”

This comes as drivers in Sacramento have been warned of a new bodycam program that charges $100 tickets via snail mail.

What’s more, the tickets are being sent weeks after the offense.

The Elk Grove Police Department in California – about 15 miles outside of Sacramento – is using body camera footage to ticket illegally parked drivers in and around school zones.

Elk Grove officers use their body cameras to capture parking violators in busy school zones.

Police car video is also being used to ticket offenders.

Those parked illegally, or who have double-parked or are in a red zone, could be caught on camera and fined.
