A two-vehicle crash in Anaheim left one woman dead and another behind bars on suspicion of driving under the influence Sunday night, Feb. 16, authorities said.
Anaheim police responded to Magnolia Avenue and Broadway about 10 p.m. and found a red SUV and a white sedan with major damage, Anaheim police Sgt. Matt Sutter said.
The SUV driver was traveling southbound on Magnolia when the driver of the sedan, who was in the northbound lanes, made a left turn in front of her, Sutter said.
The crash left the driver of the SUV, believed to be a 56-year-old Long Beach woman, trapped in the driver’s seat, Sutter said.
Firefighters freed her from the SUV and took her to a hospital, but she died about an hour after the crash.
Witnesses told police the driver of the sedan, identified as Samantha Farris, 29, of Buena Park, was drinking alcohol at a nearby Pizza Hut restaurant prior to the crash, Sutter said. Police conducted a DUI investigation and arrested Farris.
Jose Hormaza told OnScene TV, a freelance video news service that sometimes works with the Southern California News Group, that the SUV caught fire after the crash. People from inside the Pizza Hut, on the southwest corner of the intersection, came out with a fire extinguisher to try to put out the fire before firefighters arrived.
The identity of the victim was withheld by police pending notification of her relatives.
