‘Idiots’ – Premier League crowd called out by darts legend after Luke Littler criticism

Darts great Colin Lloyd has added his voice to the furore surrounding unruly fans and declared them ‘idiots’.

Night two of the Premier League was marred by constant whistles and boos by pockets of patrons at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow.

It sparked widespread condemnation from several on social media and the PDC themselves, who issued a stern statement last Friday in which they threatened to eject those who ‘behave inappropriately’ in the future.

Former world number one Lloyd conceded he had played in ‘more hostile’ venues and atmospheres than last Thursday.

However, the 51-year-old remained baffled why people who had spent their hard-earned money on a ticket to watch the darts decided to act in the way that they did.

“Tickets aren’t cheap to come to the darts,” Lloyd said on the talkSPORT Darts podcast.

“And I think to myself, why would you do that when you’ve come to be entertained?

“You’ve worked all week, you’ve worked hard for your wages, and you’re paying our wages just to go there and be an idiot, basically.

“Do you not want to be entertained, do you not want to see the spectacle of the possibility of a perfect game, a perfect nine-dart game?

“These eight titans of the game, playing at their very best, entertaining you so you get value for money.

    “I don’t get it sometimes.”

The worst of the whistling and booing came during Luke Littler‘s matches against Rob Cross and Luke Humphries.

So loud was the noise, referee Kirk Bevins stepped in to tell the crowd to quieten down and be respectful.

But in only served to antagonise the patrons as the whistling and booing grew in volume.

Speaking after his win over Humphries, Littler described the noise as ‘pretty bad’ but felt referees may just have to ‘leave it’ rather than look to get the crowd in line.

Given it’s almost impossible to please anyone when it comes to keeping the crowd in check, Lloyd understands the difficulties referees face.

“I feel sorry for the referees,” Lloyd said.

“Because sometimes a player wants some sort of order and the referee’s got to think in that split second, ‘If I call for order now, is it going to get worse?'”

Humphries had to deal with loud whistling during his throw in the finalGetty

One star who wasn’t afraid to respond to whistling fans in Glasgow was Gerwyn Price.

The Welshman was whistled at after he pinned a 180 in the fourth leg of his semi-final match against Humphries.

Instead of ignoring it, Price turned around and whistled right back at the section of fans.

Price’s gesture prompted a chuckle from Humphries as he also mouthed ‘f*** off’ in response to the hecklers.

Focus now turns to night three of the Premier League, which takes place at the 3Arena in Dublin on February 20.
