South Carolina sees 71-game home winning streak snapped in loss to UConn

South Carolina hadn’t lost a game inside Colonial Life Arena since Dec. 3, 2020.

That streak — by far the longest in Division I women’s basketball — came to an abrupt end on Sunday. In a dominant performance from the visiting Huskies, No. 7 UConn beat No. 4 South Carolina 87-58 to snap the Gamecock’s 71-game home winning streak.

South Carolina trailed 45-23 at the halftime break. It marked the largest home deficit for Dawn Staley’s team since Dec. 21, 2021. The 29-point final margin matches the largest loss South Carolina has suffered since the start of the 2011-12 season.

(Coincidentally, UConn was responsible for the other 29-point defeat as well. The Huskies beat the Gamecocks in the 2018 NCAA Tournament, 94-65. )

UConn’s Azzi Fudd scored a game-high 28 points on Sunday to help lead the Huskies over Staley’s group. She made 6 of her 10 triples while her teammates provided 7 more 3s. Paige Bueckers nearly had a triple-double with 12 points, 10 assists, and 7 rebounds.

South Carolina shot miserably from the field. The Gamecocks made just 37.7% of their shot attempts and went just 3-for-17 from beyond the arc. The 58 points South Carolina managed were the fewest in a game since March 25, 2023.

The Gamecocks (23-3, 11-1 SEC) hit the court again on Thursday when they host Arkansas.
