Kid Rock Stirs Up Controversy in Appearance on Bill Maher’s Show

Kid Rock shared a hot take on Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime Show during a recent appearance on Bill Maher’s HBO show Real Time with Bill Maher.

The 69-year-old talk show host asked the singer to share his opinion about the 2025 Super Bowl during an episode of the show that was released on Friday, Feb. 14. The “Born Free” singer, who has been a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump, told Maher that while Lamar’s Halftime Show “wasn’t my cup of tea,” he still has “respect” for the performance he watched.

“I grew up loving, emulating hip-hop—all things hip-hop,” the 54-year-old rapper-turned-country rock star said. "Breakdancing, deejaying, graffiti, rapping. And so I understand the culture a little bit more than most. And when I say most, of course, I mean white people.”

Kid Rock said that Lamar “pretty much came out, figuratively, with both middle fingers in the air, doing what he does” for his performance at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, La., on Feb. 9.

“I don’t think he gives a frog’s fat ass what anyone thinks about it,” the “Redneck Paradise” singer speculated. “So I go, ‘Huh, it’s pretty much how I’ve built my whole career. I gotta respect it.’”

Kid Rock went on to suggest that Lamar had Colin Kaepernick to thank for the opportunity to perform at Super Bowl LIX. “Without [Kaepernick] kneeling and getting everyone’s panties in a bunch over the anthem, self included, I don’t think that happens,” he said.

The singer then shared his bold take on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the wake of Lamar’s performance. “This was the epitome of DEI blowing up,” the “Cowboy” singer said.

“Kendrick Lamar goes out there and basically turns DEI into an IED,” he continued. “It’s like, it’s all Black people, or all people of color, speaking to his crowd in the hood, Black people. It was like the most not exclusive—or the most exclusive—thing ever. And I’m like, ‘F--k yeah. That’s awesome.’ I’m laughing my ass off.”
