Will Matas Buzelis Win the Dunk Contest? Rising Stars, Ayo Dosunmu’s BTS Vlog, and Other Bulls Bullets

Michael Jordan, Dominque Wilkins, Vince Carter, Zach LaVine … and Matas Buzelis.

When he completes a between-the-legs 720 from the free throw line tonight at the Chase Center, the rookie will join an elite club of all-time dunkers. The world isn’t ready for what they’re about to see!

Mandatory Credit: David Richard-Imagn Images In all seriousness, I am pretty darn excited about tonight’s festivities. While I’m sure a handful of casual fans aren’t drooling over the list of participants, that’s also because they haven’t had much of a reason to watch the Bulls this season. Those of us who have gotten to see Buzelis on a nightly basis understand just how perfect he is for an event like this. He doesn’t only jump high, shake the backboard, or contort his body. The six-foot-ten forward truly does it all. He is a stunningly graceful and fluid athlete, yet the moment it’s time to put the ball through the basket, he throws it down with an extra oomph. One of the most important factors in the dunk contest is making something incredibly difficult look incredibly easy. Buzelis has that ability. While a case could be made that his size and length are a detriment in a competition like this, I’m convinced Buzelis knows how to use it to his advantage. I think the real question is going to be how far will the rookie push himself? I mean, there is no use in playing it safe in front of a national audience, but Zach LaVine’s piece of advice to the youngster was to nail it on his first try. NBA dunk coach Chris Milan also shared with Julia Poe of the Chicago Tribune that at least one of Buzelis’ dunks will be a first of its kind. A great way to walk away with the trophy is by giving the judges something they have never seen before. Buzelis is only the fifth Bulls player to accept an invite to the All-Star Weekend staple. He joins Tyrus Thomas, Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Orlando Woodridge. Shoutout to the Bulls for this graphic … it’s sick:

    — Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) February 15, 2025 For what it’s worth, Matas Buzelis is the favorite to upset defending champ Mac McClung in The Bay. DraftKings has the two-time winner at -140, while Buzelis comes in with the second-lowest odds at +350. Stephon Castle is at +550 and Andre Jackson Jr. is +600. The latter two are high-level in-game dunkers, but I’m curious if they can show up in the creativity department. They feel far more like the kind of athletes who can sneak up on you with a poster slam than pull off a between-the-legs circus shot. Poe’s article on Buzelis’ preparation for tonight is a must-read, by the way.

“I want to be different." Matas Buzelis has one goal for All-Star weekend — land a dunk that's never been seen before. Went behind the curtain to see what goes into building a showstopper, from sessions with Zach LaVine to guidance from a "dunk doctor.”[image or embed]

    — Julia Poe (@juliapoe.bsky.social) February 15, 2025 at 9:51 AM By the way, Buzelis gave fans a little taste of his explosiveness during last night’s Rising Stars event. The rookie was added to the tournament only a handful of hours before due to an injury to Yves Missi. He suited up for Mitch Richmond’s squad and finished with 4 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal off the bench. Unfortunately, we only got to see him on the floor in one game, as Team G beat them 40-39 to advance to the finals. Nevertheless, it’s probably a good thing that he can save his legs for tonight (unlike Castle, who ended up winning the Rising Stars MVP award).

    — Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) February 15, 2025 Ayo Dosunmu released a new 30-minute vlog on Friday morning that followed the Bulls on their road trip that closed out 2024. I have to admit, it’s probably one of the best behind-the-scenes videos you’re going to get of any NBA team this season. We spend a lot of time with the Bulls on the team plane, which features plenty of high-stakes card play and goofing around. Dosunmu also brings fans along to the team hotel and an off-day workout at Howard University. Above all else, the personalities of Dosunmu and his teammates are on fully display. This feels like a extremely genuine depiction of most players on the roster, and I think it’s a good reminder for many watching at home of how normal these dudes really are. Yes, they have more money to wager on a card game and get to stay at fancy hotels, but watching them simply chill on their phones before tip-off and mess with each other on the team plane is relatable stuff. You can watch the full thing on Dosunmu’s YouTube channel here. Billy Donovan is officially a finalist for the 2025 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. When he was first announced as a nominee, I know a handful of fans were scratching their heads. But don’t forget that he is on a very short list of college basketball head coaches to win back-to-back NCAA titles. Likewise, he held a ridiculous 70.9 winning percentage while serving as a collegiate head coach at Marshall and Florida. He is one of the best to ever do it at the college level, and the fact he has even proven to be this serviceable as an NBA leader says a lot. Making that transition isn’t easy to do.

    — Basketball HOF (@Hoophall) February 14, 2025 One of the most well-known franchises in the world refuses to spend the big bucks. Michael has more thoughts on where the Cubs’ payroll ranks among the rest of MLB. The Chicago Bears are making another very important coaching hire. Speaking of spending the big bucks, that is exactly what someone would have to do if they want to rip the Bulls away from Jerry Reinsdorf. The newest NBA valuations have the Bulls still locked into the Top 4.
