The Huskies defeated Corona del Mar, 64-62, in their second-round contest Friday.

Gray’s winning shot came off a missed layup by Wesley Trevino after Jovani Ruff tied the score for the Jackrabbits (23-7) with a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left.

“I can’t believe we won the game on an (offensive) rebound,” Los Alamitos coach Nate Berger said. “We struggled to rebound all night, and the fact that we could win because we just made an effort play says a lot about our ability to push through.”

Despite not calling a timeout after Ruff’s basket, the Griffins had a play drawn up that involved Trevino getting the ball down low.

Gray said he wanted to be in position to grab an offensive rebound in case Trevino missed.

“I still had trust in Wesley, but you can’t be too safe in a CIF Division I playoff,” Gray said. “I decided to cross the board, saw the opportunity, tipped it in.”

Los Alamitos led by eight points at the half and opened the third quarter with a 10-3 run to build the lead to 15.

The Griffins led, 48-38, early in the fourth when the Jackrabbits began chipping away at the lead.

After a 3-pointer from Austin Unegbu got the Jackrabbits to within eight, Trent Minter scored to get the Griffins lead back up to double digits.

But the Griffins either missed or turned the ball over on seven of their next nine possessions, and Ruff and Nana Ofoegbu hit two baskets each to get the Jackrabbits to within four.

Ofoegbu hit one of two free throws to cut the deficit to three and then the Griffins turned the ball over again, which set up Ruff’s 3-pointer.

Long Beach Poly outrebounded Los Alamitos but the Griffins shot better from the outside, hitting seven 3-pointers while Poly made two.

Ruff led all players with 24 points. Minter scored 16 to lead the Griffins.

The Griffins also made five of six free throws.

“This is Division 1,” Jackrabbits coach Shelton Diggs said. “You’ve got to make the little plays. You’ve got to make layups. You’ve got to make free throws. You’ve got to block out and get a rebound. All that stuff, if you want to advance at this level of the playoffs, you have to do the little things. That’s why they won.

“They made free throws. They blocked out. They talked on defense. They did the stuff that we’ve been trying to do all year that just came to bite us in the butt today.”
