Mark your calendars for Sunday, March 2, and save the date for the 41st Annual Women’s History Gala Celebration.
The Gala program will begin at 1 p.m., doors open at noon, at SPACE (School of Performing Arts and Cultural Education), 508 W. Perkins St., Ukiah (parking off Dora Street). Come and enjoy a celebration of women with political dignitaries, music, poetry, and an array of finger foods.
The Mendocino Women’s Political Coalition (MWPC) is presenting this Gala with sponsors, AAUW-Ukiah and the Cloud Forest Institute. This year the theme is “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations.” The theme celebrates the collective strength and influence of women who have dedicated their lives to education, mentorship, and leadership.
Through their efforts they have served as an inspiration for all generations. As in past years, the centerpiece of the Gala will be to honor three Mendocino County women who embody the theme.
In 1981, Congress passed a resolution officially establishing the first week of March as Women’s History Week with President Jimmy Carter issuing a Proclamation, and by 1987 Congress expanded the recognition to the entire month of March, creating the National Women’s History Month along with continuing Presidential Proclamations. This year, 2025, is also a significant benchmark in celebrating the democracy of our country, as it is the 105th anniversary of the 19th Amendment securing the right to vote for women.
Fiona Ma (Contributed)Keynote speaker will be Fiona Ma, California’s 34th State Treasurer. She was first elected in November 2018 with more votes (7,825,587) than any other candidate for treasurer in the state’s history. She is the first woman CPA elected to the position.
The State Treasurer’s Office was created in the California Constitution in 1849. It provides financing for schools, roads, housing, recycling and waste management, hospitals, public facilities, and other crucial infrastructure projects. California is the world’s fifth largest economy and Treasurer Ma is the state’s primary banker.
Presently, Ma’s office processes more than $3 trillion in banking transactions. She provides transparency and oversight for the government’s investment portfolio and accounts, as well as for the state’s surplus funds. Treasurer Ma oversees an investment portfolio that currently averages over $200 billion –– a significant portion of which is beneficially owned by more than 2,200 local governments in California. She serves as agent of sale for all state bonds and is trustee of billions of dollars of state indebtedness.
Devreaux Baker, selected as the first Mendocino County Poet Laureate in 2024, will be featured to read her poetry. Baker has five published books of poetry, and she received the PEN Oakland Award for her book, “Red Willow People.” Her poetry has been published in numerous magazines and journals. Some of Baker’s poetry awards include the 2022 Fischer International Poetry Prize, the 2019 Barbara Mandigo Kelly International Peace Poetry Prize, the 2012 Hawaii Council on Humanities International Poetry Prize, and the 2010 Women’s Global Leadership Poetry Award.
Baker has taught in Mendocino County with the California Poets in the Schools program and produced The Voyager’s Radio Program of Original Student Writing for KZYX. One of the projects Baker will pursue as Mendocino County’s first Poet Laureate is to publish an anthology: “Mendocino County Women Poets, Spirit of Place, Volume II,” following the “Mendocino Women Poets Anthology: Wood, Water, Air and Fire,” which was published in 1999.
The Annual Women’s History Gala with the silent auction is the only fundraiser for MWPC. The funds are used to support the mission of MWPC: promoting women in politics through local outreach, mentoring, and leadership training, conducting campaign training, hosting candidate and other educational forums, and donating to community organizations for emergency relief.
Everyone is invited to attend this important and festive Gala Celebration, $10 at the door. You are encouraged to arrive early with doors open at noon for you to take part in the Silent Auction and to enjoy the hors d’oeuvres.
