Snowy conditions, crashes cause road closures, traffic back ups

DENVER (KDVR) -- Snowy road conditions are causing closures and backups in Colorado on Friday.

Snow and freezing temperatures are expected to impact traffic for the busy Presidents Day weekend.

    ‘Major travel impacts’ in mountains as another round of snow moves in Thursday to Saturday

    A couple of areas of Interstate 70 are closed as snow packs onto roads in the high country.

    Eastbound I-70 closed near Eagle

    Interstate 70 eastbound is closed near mile point 170, near U.S. Highway 6, due to a crash, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

    CDOT cameras showed traffic backed up in the area around 12:50 p.m. Here is how the area looked at 1 p.m.:

    The CDOT website said drivers can expect a 32-minute delay, however, as of 1:30 p.m., traffic had not moved much:

    Westbound I-70 closed from Silverthorne to US 6

    According to CDOT, there are a couple of crashes on I-70 between Silverthorne and Georgetown.

    Westbound I-70 is closed between Exit 216 at Loveland Pass and Exit 203 near Silverthorne due to safety concerns, according to CDOT.

    US Highway 6 closed in both directions

    According to CDOT, U.S. Highway 6, or Loveland Pass, is closed between mile point 222 and 228 due to safety concerns.

    Additionally, Colorado Highway 86 is closed in both directions between County Road 134 and Maul Road near Kiowa due to a crash.

    More snow is expected and the CDOT said the weather will have "major impacts" on traffic. The agency warns drivers that road conditions could change quickly this weekend.
