River Plate vs Urawa Red Diamonds Prediction: 2025 FIFA Club World Cup Preview

We look ahead to this Group E match at the 2025 Club World Cup with our River Plate vs Urawa Red Diamonds prediction and preview.

River Plate vs Urawa Red Diamonds Stats: The Key Insights

The Opta supercomputer makes River the big favourites for this one, given a 56.5% chance of victory, compared to 21.2% for Urawa Reds. This is the first ever competitive meeting between these two sides. River Plate made more appearances at the Club World Cup in its old format than any other Argentine side (two); Urawa Red Diamonds lead the way for Japanese sides (three).

The new, expanded format of the FIFA Club World Cup is throwing up plenty of never-seen-before fixtures, and River Plate vs Urawa Red Diamonds is the latest, with this Group E match the first ever meeting between the teams.

Argentine giants River, who qualified for the tournament as the best-ranked eligible team in the CONMEBOL four-year ranking, face Japan’s Urawa Reds, who are there by virtue of winning the 2022 AFC Champions League.

Both teams have pedigree in the competition as the leading sides from their respective nations in terms of appearances at the Club World Cup in its old format. This is River’s third appearance, while the Reds are taking part for a fourth time.

River have faced Japanese teams twice before in the previous Club World Cup format, and won both times without conceding a single goal (1-0 v Sanfrecce Hiroshima in 2015, 4-0 v Kashima Antlers in 2018).

Much of the interest from Europe in this match will be on 17-year-old River forward Franco Mastantuono, who will be joining Real Madrid when he turns 18 on 14 August, just a few weeks after this tournament ends. He could of course face his future employers in the latter stages of this tournament.

Mastantuono comes into the competition in fine form and he will be full of confidence having recently become the youngest player ever to represent Argentina, at 17 years and 296 days old.

In domestic football for River, he is having a very good season. Despite only playing 929 minutes in the 2025 Torneo Apertura, he had more shots than any other player (52 – 5 per 90 minutes), and he also has the most goals and assists combined of any River player (four goals, four assists).

Meanwhile, Matheus Sávio could be the dangerman for the Reds. In the 2025 J1 League, Sávio leads all of his teammates for assists (4), chances created (41), shots attempted (35), expected assists (4.2) and passes played into the box (157).

River Plate vs Urawa Red Diamonds Prediction
