Here’s hoping today’s injury update is legitimately a very minor one, with the feel of something bigger only because of the recent Alex Bregman decision and the buzzy additional interest right now in Matt Shaw:

Cubs top prospect Matt Shaw is dealing with an oblique issue, Counsell said. It popped up about five days ago on a swing in the cage. Shaw, who is competing to win 3B job, is considered day to day. Counsell: “Don’t anticipate any issues, it’s really responding well.”

Given that it happened five days ago and I’ve seen Shaw at least getting in some work on the field since then, it must not be too serious. Hopefully it isn’t an actual strain, and we don’t catch word of him going in for an MRI any time soon.

I suppose the flip side is that, because the Cubs WERE pursuing Bregman, they would’ve had at least a tiny incentive to not mention anything about Shaw’s health earlier in the week, not wanting to lose any leverage. That might make you worry it’s a little more serious, I suppose, but I’ll take Counsell at his word.

Also, Shaw isn’t exactly down in the dumps at Cubs camp:

Nothing for now changes about the expectations on Matt Shaw: he’ll have the first crack at winning the third base job right out of camp if he’s healthy. Maybe this means his spring debut gets a little delayed, but so long as it’s truly a minor issue, the timeline is such that we don’t have to worry too much.

… but that’s kind of in our nature. Oblique strains can become month+ issues if they are bad enough, so we’ll just cross our fingers that this continues to stay something short of that.
