The All-Star break has just about arrived, and that means we’re gearing up for the final push of the NBA regular season. This season has had no shortage of drama and intrigue surrounding some of the game’s biggest names and where they could potentially move on to next.

This week’s NBA Notes has a few updates on some of those players, as well as some more news. Let’s get to it!

Outside of maybe Shams Charania, I’m not sure there’s another NBA Insider more reliable and connected than Brian Windhorst. And when we’re talking about LeBron James information, Windhorst might be the most reliable source of them all. So when Windy has LeBron James news, I tend to listen. On ESPN’s Get Up, Windhorst discussed the future of LeBron and said that he doesn’t think the end 40-year-old star’s career is here just yet. “I really like what the Lakers have on their roster. I believe they can add a big man over the summer, and I really like where they’re going to be heading into next season. Unlike other people, I don’t think the end is near for LeBron James. I think he’s got runway left. I think he can still be an All-NBA player next year. I see no reason why, a year from now, they can’t be a team that is really hunting for that top spot – that title.” – Brian Windhorst on ESPN’s Get Up Now, predicting LeBron to come back year isn’t the boldest take in the world, but the idea of him retiring at the end of this year hasn’t been dismissed yet either. I just kind of take this report as confirmation that James won’t hang up the sneakers at the end of this season. If I was at about 80/20 that he’d be back, I’m now pretty close to 100 percent. And really, why wouldn’t he? He’s got a brand new running mate in Luka Doncic who’s one of the most talented players in the league. Austin Reaves has been outstanding. And the Lakers have the ability to add a much-needed big this offseason after the Mark Williams trade was voided. LA is in the middle of a solid season, and while a title might be an uphill climb this season, with a productive summer they could be one of the favorites in the West next year. LeBron is still playing at an elite level. He’s also due to make $52 million next season. Again, not that there was a ton of doubt, but with how he’s looked this season and how the Lakers have tweaked their roster, it feels like he’s pretty close to being a lock to come back for another campaign in 2025-26. While Kevin Durant will certainly be back playing next year, the prevailing feeling is that it won’t be in Phoenix. And it seems like both parties are pretty ok with that. Durant’s time in Phoenix has ultimately been a failure. It hasn’t really been due to anything KD has done wrong, he’s played well. They’ve just committed a ton of money to a very small portion of their roster, and over $50 million of that goes to Bradley Beal, who has never seemed to fit in alongside Durant and Devin Booker. The Suns have a $230 million payroll and are way over the luxury tax. Beal’s contract has been pretty unmovable despite their best efforts at this year’s trade deadline. They even tried gauging the market for Durant at the deadline. While that didn’t work out, according to Windhorst, both KD and the Suns are open to exploring other options this summer. Doing that at the deadline would have been tough, and there only would have been a limited amount of suitors able to pull off a deal. Waiting until the offseason allows Durant to have more of an ability to pick a destination and the Suns to maximize their return. So nothing is set in stone yet, but things seem to certainly be trending toward a Durant departure from Phoenix this summer. First, they shockingly traded Luka Doncic for an underwhelming return – though that isn’t a knock on Anthony Davis, he’s a great player, but given the age situation Dallas certainly should have gotten more. Then, Davis made his debut and was having an outstanding game. During that game, however, he suffered an adductor injury that looked pretty bad. Finally, Dallas got some good news. NBA Insider Marc Stein reported that Dallas has some “tangible optimism” regarding Davis’ injury, and it looks like he might be able to avoid the surgery route. That doesn’t mean he’ll be back ASAP, but with the All-Star break coming and plenty of time off, Davis not needing surgery and thus speeding up his return is a huge win for the Mavs. Dallas has won three of their last four and head into the All-Star break after tonight’s matchup with Miami. Another win gives them plenty of momentum and reason to be excited, at least for the short term, that they can make a bit of a run with a healthy Anthony Davis.

A firm treatment course and projected recovery timetable have still yet to be announced by the Mavericks … but there has been tangible optimism in Dallas this week that Anthony Davis (adductor strain) can avoid the surgical route.More of my trade coverage:… pic.twitter.com/JoppqFoPui

    — Marc Stein (@TheSteinLine) February 12, 2025 Speaking of All-Star Weekend, this year’s event is in San Francisco. However, Steph Curry won’t be featured in a three-point contest rematch against WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu. The two faced off last season at All-Star weekend in a three-point contest where Steph Curry prevailed in an outstanding showdown. NBA spokesman Mike Bass said that all parties agreed not to proceed with the event because they couldn’t come up with a format that could top last year’s. It’s a little bit of a bummer because last year’s was fun, but I guess the decision is understandable. Last night, the Raptors and Cavaliers played in Toronto in which Cleveland prevailed with a 131-108 win. With just four seconds remaining, veteran big man Tristan Thompson decided to use some of his rare playing time to do some stat padding. Holding the ball on the wing and with the other nine players on the floor shaking hands and such, Thompson decided to drive the lane and throw down a two-handed slam.

"I think what Tristan [Thompson] did there was no class and disrespectful… I love when my team stands up for themselves. That was no class."Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic RIPPED Tristan for his last-second dunk at the end of the Cavs' blowout win.pic.twitter.com/MJoNPkzlPE

    — ClutchPoints (@ClutchPoints) February 13, 2025 Good job Tristan, you really showed everyone! Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic understandably wasn’t thrilled and ripped Thompson in the post-game press conference calling him classless and disrespectful. Good for Rajakovic, honestly. The Cavs are one of the best teams in the NBA, the Raptors are rebuilding. All Thompson did was show up the other, and also kind of make his teammates look bad, too. It’s not like this was a college football game where one team was up 40 and still throwing. This was a moment in a game where the rest of the players on the floor had stopped playing. Not a great look for a veteran who’s been in the league for quite some time.
