Fans Launch Tirade Against YouTube TV: This Is a Joke

Big changes are coming to YouTube TV—and customers aren't happy about it.

A number of channels owned by Paramount Global, including CBS, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and MTV, are scheduled for removal from YouTube TV after Thursday, Feb. 13, due to a contract dispute between the two companies.

"We've been working hard to reach a fair agreement with Paramount that allows us to keep their channels, including CBS and CBS Sports, on YouTube TV without passing on additional costs to our subscribers. Unfortunately, despite our good faith negotiations, we haven't been successful yet," YouTube TV said in a statement.

On a special webpage devoted to the issue, Paramount claimed that YouTube TV is “attempting to pressure Paramount to unfavorable and one-sided terms," accusing the platform of "prioritizing their own interests over a fair agreement."

YouTube TV explained that it is "still actively negotiating with Paramount," but "if we can't reach an agreement and their content is unavailable for an extended period of time, we'll offer subscribers an $8 credit," before suggesting that viewers who want to watch Paramount content can still do so by signing up for Paramount+ and paying an additional $7.99 a month.

However, fans on social media weren't satisfied, particularly because the cost of a new YouTube TV base plan subscription increased from $72.99 to $82.99 in December 2024, per Variety.

"A month after jacking up their monthly subscription price by $10, they're set to remove 24 channels and only offer subscribers an $8 credit in return. This is a joke, @YouTubeTV," wrote one person on X.

"Historically this is what all cable, satellite, and streaming services have done. Get you in at a lower rate, then reduce the channel line-up while increasing prices. @YouTubeTV could be the one that is different, but no, greed is infectious," another disappointed viewer pointed out.

"Losing CBS right before March Madness is wild," someone declared.

"Yeah if they don’t reach a deal I think I’m gonna decide to spend my $80 a month elsewhere," somebody else added.

"This happens every 6 months or so as contracts expire," another commenter argued, adding, "Youtube is using this to try a get a better deal. Cable companies have done it for decades. This is why I completely cut the cable over a year ago."

According to a blog post from YouTube CEO Neal Mohan, YouTube TV had over 8 million subscribers as of Feb. 6, 2024.
