Minimalist MagSafe Case: comfortable, classy, and convenient
buy otterbox on amazonOutside of my home, car, and MacBook Pro, my iPhone 16 Pro Max is my most expensive device. Despite the availability of Apple Care Plus, I still fear drops, spills, tumbles, scratches, scuffs, and anything that would depreciate my phone. I have tried various cases, including full Hulk-Buster Armor style, waterproof styles, and thin silicone, bumper style cases. I know I am not the only one who wants the safety of a fully protected iPhone with the freedom of an unadorned, unrestricted, unweighted natural state. If you want to slip into something a little more comfortable, perhaps The OtterBox Figura is the right device for you.
The OtterBox Figura Series iPhone 16 Pro Max case arrived in a pristine, white retail package. The cover panel provided the yellow OtterBox logo and the grey-font Figura product name along the upper edge. I liked the vibrancy of the yellow logo against the plain white backdrop and the contrast with the grey text. The main focal point of the cover was the 1 11/16 inches wide by 4 1/4 inches tall cutout case display located at the lower left portion of the cover.
The window provided a direct view and an opportunity to touch/interact the case. The rear panel provided four labeled product features in a multi-lingual layout: Unique hydro-dipped case, Military Drop Standards (Mil-Std_810G 516.6), Flexible Soft-touch material, Ultra-Slim One-Piece design. I liked the product icons but would have liked for the other languages to have a larger font and more space. The lower edge of the panel provided some contact information, a warranty icon, a QR code, and a UPC barcode. The bottom panel listed trademark, contact, and recycling details.
I slid the inner tray from the outer packaging and removed the 1.4-ounce Figura case from the cardboard insert. I liked the smooth plastic texture of the case and found a bit of allure in the visual light gradient to darker smokey segments. The rear panel had a 1 1/2 inches square by 1/8 inches tall camera cutout along the top left and a subdued view of the internal MagSafe ring. The right side panel had a 1/4 inches long by 1/8 inches tall action button, a 7/16 inches long by 1/8 inches tall volume up button, a 7/16 inches long by 1/8 inches tall volume down button, and an etched OTTERBOX logo.
The left side panel provided an 11/16 inches long by 1/8 inches tall power button, and a recessed 11/16 inches wide by 1/8 inches tall camera control button cutout. Unlike many iPhone 16 Pro Max cases, the cutout provided an upper border that protected the screen’s edge. This feature was an enhancement over the U-shaped cutout on other OtterBox cases. The bottom edge had a centrally located oval-shaped USB-C port cutout measuring 1/2 inches wide by 1/4 inches tall. A 3/8-inch wide by 1/8-inch tall speaker port and a 9/16-inch long by 1/8-inch tall speaker port flanked the USB-C cutout. The inner surface of the case had a white-colored MagSafe ring and the camera cutout.
I inserted the right edge of my iPhone 16 Pro Max into the case and then pressed the top, side, and bottom edges downward. The rubberized case slid around my iPhone and provided a soft, reassuring pop-feel once fully installed. The side, top, and bottom panels radiated over the screen and protected the glass. I loved the design of the camera cutout and the fact that the Figura case had a full-screen protecting rim. The action, volume, and power buttons gripped the phone’s buttons and provided a refreshing and reliable click-feel. I liked the concept of the recessed design and found that the action button cutout aligned well with the phone’s button. However, I would have liked the action button to have the same design as the other buttons; the case would benefit from a raised button instead of a recessed cutout for improved accuracy. The current design created a near-flush feel of the button and silicone background. Lastly, the speaker and USB-C cutouts successfully meshed with the phone’s layout, and allowed easy access for USB-C charging cables.
The case may seem monotone, dull, or dusky if you are in a darker room. However, under more direct or indirect light, the case will present a more smokey and artistic presence. The rear panel’s smooth matte surface did a great job at preventing fingerprints, while also serving as a pseudo-grippy surface. I liked the grip-feel of the Figura case more than the plasticky-slick feel of the Commuter case. I found the flexible material compressed slightly when held and yielded a more comfortable experience than the harder, more rigid cases. Several reviews on the OtterBox website expressed concern regarding the smooth surface and concern regarding drops. I can attest that I did not have that experience. In fact, I enjoyed the surface and found that the lightweight case added very little heft to the phone and created a near-naked phone feel.
Despite the lightweight, minimalist design, the case still protected the screen from glancing blows and accommodated an OtterBox screen protector. The MagSafe ring affixed securely to my desktop and car chargers and held firmly to each device. Although I had high hopes that the case would be thin enough to charge on my Tesla Y wireless charge pad, the case/camera bezel lifted the phone too high to allow for wireless charging. It is important to note that this was not a limitation of the case but of the wireless charging pad design.
To simulate a dropped experience, I placed the phone onto my lap and stood up. I recreated this event twice and found no damage when it dropped onto my hardwood floor. For a final test, I placed the phone screen down on my kitchen table and simulated a swiping phone drop of the phone from the table to the floor. Again, the case proved its worth and protected my phone. In conclusion, I was pleased with the overall design and protective qualities of the case.
I liked the dark grey color backdrop, screen protection, button layout and responsiveness, and the cutouts for the camera, speakers, USB-C port, and the camera control. The case is available in Solar Wind (Black), Northern Lights (Blue), EOS (Purple), Solstice (Rainbow), and Space. Outside of my request for the camera button, my only other complaint was with the $49.99 price point; the price felt a bit high for a thin silicone shell. Despite the concern, it was still cheaper than the ~$70 Defender-style cases.
