Scorched areas of Airport fire under voluntary evacuation orders Thursday

Canyon areas scorched by the Airport fire in September will be under a voluntary evacuation order starting at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, according to an alert from the County of Orange.

The order will be for areas of Trabuco Canyon, Hot Springs Canyon, Bell Canyon, Long Canyon and Modjeska Canyon, county officials said Wednesday afternoon. The Airport Fire burned an estimated 23,526 acres between Orange and Riverside counties and destroyed 160 structures.

The voluntary evacuation order warns of possible debris flows along or near the Airport fire burn scar, as concerns grow with the winter’s largest storm expected to soak Southern California.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for the burn scar area from 10 a.m. Thursday through 4 a.m. Friday.

“Canyon residents are strongly encouraged to prepare and voluntarily evacuate … especially those with disabilities, access and/or functional needs, and canyon residents with large animals,” officials said. “Residents living in the evacuation areas are encouraged to leave early and plan for alternate shelter with friends, family or at a local hotel outside of the evacuation area.”

Those with disabilities or similarly requiring evacuation assistance should call Orange County Sheriff’s Department Dispatch at 714-647-7000.

Depending on conditions, the voluntary warning may transition into a mandatory warning, with little or no notice, officials said, so residents leaving the area are encouraged to plan accordingly.

There will also be soft road closures in the canyon areas, particularly in Trabuco Canyon and Modjeska Canyon near the Airport fire burn scar.

Also, O’Neill Regional Park will be closed, including the campgrounds, out of an abundance of caution, officials said.

The county, in coordination with the Orange County Social Services Agency, Orange County Public Libraries and the American Red Cross, will open a dormitory-style shelter location for evacuated residents starting at 8 a.m. on Thursday at the Foothill Ranch Library Program Annex, next to the Foothill Ranch Library, 27002 Cabriole Way.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department also put out an alert, warning that locations downhill and downstream from burned areas such as the 2024 Airport fire are “highly susceptible to flash flooding and debris flows, especially near steep terrain, creek and bridge crossings.”

“The powerful force of rushing water, soil and rock, both within the burned area and downstream, can destroy culverts, bridges, roadways, and structures, and can cause injury or death if care is not taken.”
