Keelon Russell spoke about his future at Alabama this week as he prepares to begin his collegiate career this spring.
Russell, who signed with the Crimson Tide as a 5-star prospect back in December, told On3’s Nick Schultz this week that he’s looking forward to working with new Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. Kalen DeBoer previously worked with Grubb at Washington and is bringing him to Tuscaloosa after he spent the 2024 season in the NFL.
“What he did with Michael Penix, it’s legendary,” Russell said of his new OC. “I’m excited … The offense finna turn up this year. We’re finna be great.”
Indeed, Penix put up historic numbers in 2023 when Grubb and DeBoer leading the Huskies’ offense. Penix led the nation with 4,903 yards and also contributed 36 touchdown passes while leading Washington all the way to the National Championship Game that season.
With Russell, Grubb will have a blue-chip prospect capable of putting up big numbers as well. Russell was regarded as the No. 2 overall player in the country for the class of 2025, per 247Sports Composite rankings.
Alabama is expected to hold a quarterback competition this offseason with Russell as a key contender to win the job. Veteran Ty Simpson and former Washington transfer Austin Mack are also considered to be candidates to win the starting role.
Alabama’s spring game will be held on April 12.
