Super Bowl national anthem controversy over singer Jon Batiste extending song causing major confusion

THE Super Bowl national anthem, performed by signer Jon Batiste on Sunday night, has left sportsbooks in disarray.

The seven-time Grammy Award-winning Batiste extended the song, which has caused sportsbooks to have different interpretations of when he actually finished his performance at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

At the end of Batiste’s Star-Spangled Banner, Batise sang “o’er the land of the free” three times.

The New Orleans native also held “the brave” for close to eight seconds, and the final instrumentals of the song couldn’t be heard due to the sound of the flyover jets over the stadium.

So a few sportsbooks timed their bet based on when Batiste finished his vocals, while others stopped the time when the music ended.

The anthem prop bet went over on FanDuel (120.5 seconds) while the props on DraftKings (119.5) and BetMGM (120.5) were under.

The three sportsbooks above offered the prop bet only in Ontario, Canada, due to regulations.

Bettors in the US were only able to bet on the national anthem on offshore sites like Bovada and BetOnline.

The 121-second over hit on Bovada, while BetOline reportedly took away the bet before the game due to an apparent rehearsal leak.

Fans shared their disagreements with their respective betting sites concerning the anthem prop.

“Last time I bet the national anthem with Bovada,” one wrote.

“Baptist repeating “land of the free” at least 3x cost me that prop bet,” another wrote.

Nonetheless, Batiste’s anthem performance was praised on social media.

He played the piano while belting out the song.

    “Bro killed it,” one commented.

“This is beautiful,” a second stated.

The song even caused Kansas City Chiefs star defender Chris Jones to break down in tears.

The 30-year-old, however, has cried during every national anthem before Chiefs games during their playoff run.

Jones was also seen dropping to his knees before putting his hands to his fits during a sequence of the Chiefs’ eventual 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Last year’s Super Bowl also saw sportsbooks split on the national anthem prop bet.

Before the showdown, Reba McEntire added an extra “the brave” at the end of the performance and created confusion.

The song went past the line of 90.5 seconds and BetMGM paid out betters who put the money on both the over and the over.
