The NFL Hiring Cycle is Complete: The Saints Are Making It Official With Kellen Moore

Kellen Moore is extending his stay in New Orleans.

Two days after the Philadelphia Eagles won Super Bowl LIX at the Superdome in New Orleans, the team’s offensive coordinator is flying away to become the Saints’ new head coach:

And with that, Kellen Moore’s whirlwind coaching journey is complete. The Saints head coaching gig will be Moore’s fourth different job in as many years. Moore began this trek as the Dallas Cowboys’ offensive coordinator (2019-22) before taking that position with the Los Angeles Chargers (2023) and Philadelphia Eagles (2024. In addition to being a well-traveled offensive play caller, Moore was one of the most entertaining college football quarterbacks of his time. Moore was a two-time first-team All-American (2009, 2010) and three-time Conference Offensive Player of the Year (WAC in 2009 and 2010, Mountain Wast in 2011) for Boise State. Now, he will turn his attention to head coaching duties for the first time.

Saints hire Kellen Moore to close the NFL’s offseason hiring cycle

Kellen Moore takes over one of the most unenviable jobs in the NFL. New Orleans is coming off a 5-12 campaign that marked the team’s second sub-.500 season in three years. The Saints haven’t qualified for the postseason since 2020 (you might remember that they beat the Bears in what turns out to be the last time Chicago’s football team was playoff-eligible) and are in straight-up salary cap hell. New Orleans is $54,112,537 *OVER* the projected NFL 2025 salary cap, according to calculations by the fine folks at OverTheCap.com. But at least the Saints have the ninth overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. So they’ve got that going for them going into this offseason.

Now that the Saints have hired Kellen Moore, there are no more head coach openings in the NFL. These are the teams with new coaches:

CHICAGO BEARS: Ben Johnson DALLAS COWBOYS: Brian Schottenheimer JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS: Liam Coen LAS VEGAS RAIDERS: Pete Carroll NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS: Mike Vrabel NEW YORK JETS: Aaron Glenn NEW ORLEANS SAINTS: Kellen Moore

The Bears have games scheduled against Dallas, Las Vegas, and New Orleans — three teams with new head coaches. That is kinda fun to think about.

Of the six other head coaches who were hired by teams this offseason, three had interviews with the Bears. Brian Schottenheimer, Liam Coen, and Kellen Moore weren’t ever reported to be among the candidates who Chicago had submitted requests to interview in January. There was a small part of me that wonders why Coen never interviewed with the Bears, but his introductory press conference in Jacksonville went a long way toward explaining why that didn’t happen.
