It’s been an active little offseason for the Los Angeles Angels, eh? Although Jansen, 37, is long past his prime and a full-tier or two down from his heights as the best closer in the game, he’s been a very useful reliever in each of the last three seasons. And that comes with peripherals to match:
If he stays healthy throughout the year, I think he’ll be a very good piece for the Angels (… to flip at the trade deadline). And that’s especially true given the affordable nature of his new contract: 1 year/$10M according to Ken Rosenthal. Frankly, I would have loved to see the Cubs land him in that range, though their recent additions of Ryan Pressly and Ryan Brasier smooth that over a bit.
Plus, who knows, if the Cubs wind up whiffing on Alex Bregman, perhaps they’ll still go out and sign David Robertson. Total guess there, but why not take the extra reliever now for money only instead of spending money *and* prospects for someone else at the trade deadline? But I digress.
In any case, Kenley Jansen heads to Southern California, where he spent over a decade with the Dodgers. And I fully expect him to be traded at the deadline.
There’s not much market (or Cubs) impact from this deal for Kenley Jansen. Generally speaking, his contract is in line with our expectations. And, as we just discussed, the Cubs seem mostly settled in the bullpen for now.
