COSTCO has imposed a limit on a popular household item as shoppers are being forced to stand in a specific line to buy it.
Footage uploaded to TikTok on the Saturday before the Super bowl shows frustrated shoppers waiting in huge lines that lead all through the store.
Costco is now making their customers queue in a separate line to be able to buy eggs, meaning that those wanting to purchase the essential item are taking longer to shop for their groceries.
The TikTok account that posted the video explained that they had to wait up to 15 minutes in a special line before buying some eggs.
Those who didn’t stand in the extra long line were able to walk freely around the store, as the rest were shepherded to the dairy section.
The disgruntled Costco customer arrived at the store at 9:30 am, but by 10:15 am, all of the eggs had sold out.
They ended up paying $18.69 for five dozen eggs.
Several shocked shoppers expressed their annoyances with this new system in the comments of the video.
IN THE COMMENTS
One person wrote: “Don’t get me wrong I love Costco but that’s crazy.
“I went to BJs today and they had hella eggs in stock and no line at all.
“There was a limit of 2 per person but that was it.”
A second person commented: “I went to Costco Thursday night and there were plenty of eggs…48 for $12.”
And a third person added: “This is actually crazy.”
The comments on the video suggest that Costco is currently the only major supermarket chain who are using this two-line system.
Stores like Sam’s Club, Trader Joe’s and Walmart were all mentioned, with customers saying that Costco lines are highly unusual.
It is not know where this Costco is in the country.
Why is there an egg shortage in the US?
Chicken farms are currently being devastated by a new strain of the Avian flu – which has led to egg shortages and higher prices.
The rise in the disease has meant a mass culling of egg-laying hens, restricting the supply flow that is able to reach customers.
Supermarkets across the country, particularly in Washington and Florida, are struggling to keep shelves stocked.
Jada Thompson, a poultry specialist at the University of Arkansas, said: “If there’s no birds to lay eggs… then we have a supply shortage, and that leads to higher prices because of supply and demand dynamics.”
In Washington, supermarket shelves are often empty, and some stores have imposed limits on the number of cartons customers can purchase.
Official data shows the average cost of a dozen Grade A eggs soared by 65% in December compared to the previous year, jumping from $2.50 to $4.15.
Americans are feeling the pinch because they rank among the world’s biggest egg consumer, with the average American eating 277 eggs per year, according to the United Egg Producers.
The avian flu outbreak is not limited to poultry. The virus has also been detected in dairy cows, raising further concerns about its spread.
COSTCO CONTROVERSY
This isn’t the only issue that Costco is facing right now, as reported by The U.S. Sun.
Customers are currently calling for a boycott of the store after they noticed Sam’s club selling a beloved item for “significantly” less.
They explained: “Sam’s club uses the same business model, and sells many of the exact same items at significantly lower prices, including their food court hot dogs.”
Costco customers have recently shared their concerns that the beloved $1.50 hot dog combo deal is at risk of becoming more expensive.
The shopper claimed to have evidence that Costco is a more expensive store.
They revealed they had run a “comparison between Sam’s and Costco”, looking at the prices of their usual grocery list.
The results showed that not a single item was cheaper at Costco than at Sam’s.
In fact, around three-quarters of the items were “anywhere from 5-15 per cent cheaper at Sam’s”.
Some social media users felt Costco’s success was deserved, however.
One fan of the store claimed it was “an under appreciated company for sure”.
Another said: “Impressive gains! Long-term investment pays off,”
A third said: “It’s the hotdogs” that keep bringing people back – even if they are cheaper at Sam’s.
