The ICC Champions Trophy is just around the corner. South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has claimed that the ICC Champions Trophy is tougher than the ODI World Cup. The Proteas captain went on to explain that things become extremely difficult as there are just 3 group-stage matches in the Champions Trophy.
But things are different in the ODI World Cup. 9 group stage matches before the knockouts give the teams enough time to regroup and access conditions. This in turn helps the team in building the proper momentum heading into the knockouts. But that isn’t the case with the ICC Champions Trophy.
Bavuma explains why Champions Trophy is difficult compared to World Cup
“In the World Cup, teams have time to assess, regroup, and build momentum,” Temba Bavuma said during a press conference in Pakistan.
The Proteas captain went on to explain that things are difficult in the Champions Trophy. 8 teams take part in the tournament and each team goes on to play just 3 group stage games. This means they need to deliver from the start else the risk of elimination continues to hang.
“But in the Champions Trophy, there’s no room for missteps—you either deliver from the start or risk elimination. We have our sights set on going one step further this time. It’s a high-pressure competition, but we’re ready for the challenge,” Bavuma added.
The South Africa Cricket Team begin their Champions Trophy challenge on 21st February. They take on Afghniatan in their opening game. This is followed by matches against Australia and England.
