Why do the Kansas City Chiefs have an ‘A’ on their jerseys?

As back-to-back Super Bowl champions looking to be the first side in history to three-peat, the Kansas City Chiefs will once again be in the global gaze.

Newer and possibly regular fans may question what the large “A” patch on the Kansas City shirts means as they pay closer attention during the showpiece event.

The Chiefs have worn the “A” patch since the 2007 season thus it is by no means a recent addition. The patch is located just over the player’s numbers on the left of their chest.

What’s the meaning behind the “A” on Chiefs uniforms?

The American Football League was formed in 1960 by the late Lamar Hunt, who is honoured by the patches.

In 1970, the AFL and NFL combined to form the league that exists today.

Since he moved the Chiefs to Kansas City in 1963, Hunt’s influence is also seen inside the organisation.

Beginning in 1960, he was the owner of the Dallas Texans until deciding to transfer the franchise.

Until his passing, he remained a beloved member of the Chiefs organisation.

Hunt died in December 2006, forcing his son Clark Hunt, who became Chiefs owner, to put together the patch designs for the jerseys in 2007.

The patch’s design resembles the old AFL logo. The huge “A” is encircled by six stars, and the original logo had an eagle behind the letter.

However, in the original design, the initials AFL were visible in the football below the “A,” but the Chiefs modified it to “LH” to represent Lamar Hunt.

The “A” patch on the Chiefs’ shirts sometimes incorporates extra components, such as stars and an eagle, akin to the original AFL design.

And on February 9 we will once again see, on the biggest occasion of them all, the ‘A’ as a constant presence in the Chiefs current dynasty.
