Ryan Day makes $87.5 million decision over his Ohio State Buckeyes future after NFL head coach interest

OHIO STATE coach Ryan Day has agreed in principle to a contract extension until 2031 after guiding the collegiate side to a national title.

The school announced the popular decision on Thursday and has waved away interest to return to the NFL as a head coach in the process.

A reported annual salary of $12.5 million will place Day as the second-highest paid college football coach, after Kirby Smart of Georgia.

Last year, Day earned little over $10 million. In 2028, his contract was set to end. The extension has to be approved by OSU’s Board of Trustees.

“I want to thank President Ted Carter, director of athletics Ross Bjork and the Board of Trustees for the confidence and trust they have in me to oversee this program,” Day said in a statement released by OSU.

“My family and I are incredibly grateful to be a part of the Ohio State community, this football program and Buckeye Nation.”

“I want to thank my assistant coaches and the entire staff for the tireless effort they put in to keep Ohio State positioned as one of the elite programs in the country … on and off the field.

“And I especially want to thank and commend all the young men, and their families, who are a part of this football program.

“This is a team of tough and determined individuals who drive our culture of respect, commitment and love.”

Day gave an incredible and touching $1 million to The Ohio State University Medical Center’s mental health issues shortly after securing the agreement.

The former Eagles and 49ers coach, who has a 70-10 record, took over as coach in 2019 after Urban Meyer. Among active coaches, he has the greatest victory percentage – 87.5 per cent.

Only three current coaches have won national titles; the other two are Smart and Dabo Swinney of Clemson.

The Buckeyes won their first national championship since 2014 after defeating Notre Dame 34-23 in Atlanta to wrap off their championship journey.

In 2022, Day was last given a contract extension with an update that extended his agreement by two years and increased his yearly salary to about $10 million.

The next year, he was paid more than eight figures after leading the Buckeyes to the College Football Playoffs for the third time in four seasons.

The rise also took into account a $250,000 retention incentive.

Day is one of just a few coaches in the Football Bowl Subdivision who have earned over $10 million with his resume commanding such a figure.

Ohio State will seek to defend their crown in 2025.

The team is currently the bookies favourite for the next championships and with Day’s extension, the Buckeyes will believe they have the structure and stability necessary to compete again.
