JOE Burrow turned heads with his comments on the Cincinnati Bengals and the team’s contract situations with multiple stars.
The 28-year-old NFL star quarterback appeared on FSI’s morning show Breakfast Ball on Thursday and discussed numerous topics concerning the Bengals, who brutally missed this season’s playoffs.
Burrow joined the ESPN program ahead of Super Bowl 59 as he opened up about a challenging offseason ahead for his Bengals.
The franchise will have decisions to make on the futures of star players Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Trey Hendrickson.
Burrow made it clear to the world on live television that the team has to keep its current core intact, and the players whose futures remain uncertain share the same vision.
“We have the cap space to get it done. I want to make it happen. Everybody involved Trey, Tee, Ja’Marr, Mike [Gesicki], we all want to stay together,” he said.
“When you have guys that are motivated like that I think you can get those things done.”
The Bengals have an estimated $46.5 million in cap space before accounting for the team’s 2025 draft picks, practice squad players, and bonus money for incentives.
The team could make numerous cuts and gain $30 million to work with, giving them close to $60 million in cap space entering free agency.
And Burrow has recently revealed that he’s willing to restructure his five-year, $250 million contract he signed in September 2023.
“I know how important it is to keep great players together and so, I’m going to do what it takes and I know they will, too,” he said on the Up & Adams Show with host Kay Adams.
“Hopefully our organization does what it takes to keep everyone around.”
The four-time Pro Bowl wideout Chase has looked to receive a contract extension, and fellow wide receiver Higgins will be a free agent after playing on the franchise tag last season.
The Bengals will have to decide on the future of the 2024 sack leader Hendrickson, who is under contract for just one more season and has made it clear that he wants a new deal or he’ll request a trade.
Cincinnati will have a grand total of 23 impending free agents, with 18 of them being unrestricted.
They are coming off a season in which they finished 9-8 – a record that doesn’t provide the full context of how they began the year.
The Bengals lost four of the campaign’s first five games and couldn’t make the playoffs, despite ending the season with a five-game winning streak.
Burrow’s top two offensive weapons have been Chase and Higgins.
The signal-caller led the NFL in passing yards, with 4,918, and touchdowns (43) in 2024.
Burrow is a finalist for the AP’s MVP, Offensive Player of the Year, and Comeback Player of the Year awards, which will be announced on Thursday at the NFL Honors.
