Former Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen is expected to join the Buffalo Bills coaching staff, according to The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman.

Nielsen will be a senior defensive assistant with the Bills, said Feldman, and also added that Nielsen drew “high interest” from multiple teams during this hiring cycle.

The 2024 season was Nielsen’s first with the Jaguars and the defense would have it’s struggles, particularly against opposing passing games.

Overall, the Jaguars’ pass defense ranked 27th in points per game allowed. They also ranked 30th or worse in interceptions, yards per pass attempt allowed, passer rating, and in pressure rate on the opposing quarterback.

Before joining the Jaguars, Nielsen was the Atlanta Falcons’ defensive coordinator in 2023. That year, the Falcons defense ranked 17th in points per game.

Under new head coach Liam Coen, the Jaguars’ defensive coordinator is Anthony Campanile, who joins Jacksonville after a successful 2024 season in Green Bay as the team’s run game coordinator and linebackers coach.

Campanile comes with a wide-ranging coaching background at the NFL level, having operated under a variety of defensive schemes.
