How to fix the lack of in-game sound in Gamespace when using an LG monitor with REDMAGIC Nova Tablet
I have been playing Call of Duty Mobile (CODM) consistently for the past three years. I have enjoyed playing it using the different platforms available — Phones, Tablets, PC, Chinese PC, and even regional-based based like Garena. You could say I have become quite an aficionado of CODM.
I started playing with an iPhone but quickly moved to other devices to play the game. I wanted better visual quality and a bigger screen. I’m getting old and my eyes might not be what they used to be. Needless to say, I ended up acquiring the REDMAGIC Nova tablet so that I could take advantage of REDMAGIC’s console-mode feature. This allows you to use the tablet with an external monitor and have a full-screen gaming experience with a 120Hz refresh rate.
I have been doing this for the better part of a year now and I recently decided I wanted to get away from the monitor I was using — the Alienware 32 4K QD-OLED Gaming Monitor – Alienware. So, I picked up the LG 45GS95QE-B.AUS 44.5″ 2K WQHD (3440 x 1440) 240Hz Curved Screen Gaming Monitor and was in love with the quality of the picture and the gaming experience. I didn’t have any trouble getting the REDMAGIC Nova to connect and it was immediately recognized as an input source.
My CODM Gaming Setup REDMAGIC Nova Gaming Tablet FLYDIGI APEX 4 Controller (connected via Bluetooth) Kensington SD5000T5 Thunderbolt 5 Dock (connected to the tablet using USB 4 Gen 3 cable) Logitech PRO X2 Gaming Headset (connected via 2.4Ghz receiver) LG 45GS95QE-B.AUS 44.5″ 2K WQHD (3440 x 1440) 240Hz Curved Screen Gaming Monitor (connected to dock using DisplayPort 1.4 to USB-C cable)Everything seemed to be fine until I activated full-screen mode through REDMAGIC’s Gamespace app. When you start up Gamespace, you will receive a notification asking if you want to activate ‘mirror mode.’ This is the mode that will make your input source full-screen. As soon as I selected it, I lost my sound. I had sound just fine until I entered Gamespace Mirror Mode and then it just stopped.
I tried all sorts of troubleshooting steps to try to find the answer including:
changing cables changing docks changing monitors using different audio sources plugging the tablet directly into the monitor without a dock (no sound came through the tablet’s speakers)While the tablet is a great device, it is hard to find any information on Gamespace in order to troubleshoot an issue like this. I reached out to REDMAGIC support and when I didn’t receive any help from them I decided to reach out to LG via their chat support.
After describing the issue to the rep, they sent a couple of canned answers about troubleshooting sound issues with a Windows computer even though I explained what device I was using. The rep ended up stating that they didn’t have experience with REDMAGIC’s Gamespace and suggested that it wasn’t a monitor problem. With the support options exhausted, I switched back to my Alienware AW3225QF monitor to see if the problem still existed with that monitor.
For whatever reason, I still had sound with the Alienware when I used Gamespace’s Mirror Mode. This told me the problem had to exist in the communication between the REDMAGIC tablet and the LG monitor.
I continued digging through the Nova tablet settings because the menu for the LG monitor was limited on what could be changed. I finally stumbled upon an option for “Sound separation under screen cast” in the Z-Smartcast menu. The toggle switch next to this option was turned on, so on a whim, I flipped it off and my audio returned.
“Sound separation under screen cast” is a feature that lets you control how audio is routed when casting or mirroring your screen. It splits the audio output so that game sound stays on the tablet and the mirrored display receives only the video signal without sound. While I’m not entirely certain about the reason for this, I believe that it’s more than likely the fact that the Alienware monitor wasn’t being seen as an audio output device because it doesn’t try to receive audio. The LG on the other hand, can receive audio. It doesn’t have its own built-in speakers, but it does have a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Here are the steps to rectify this issue.
If the monitor automatically turns this setting ON when entering Mirror Mode, manually disable it after launching Mirror Mode in Gamespace, and the audio will return. Go to Settings > Z-Smartcast on the REDMAGIC Nova Tablet. Look for “Sound separation under screen cast” (there’s an on/off toggle). Turn it off — This ensures the full sound is available in Mirror Mode within Gamespace. The reason for the story is it seems not all monitors will play nicely with the REDMAGIC Nova Tablet right out of the box. If you experience this lack of sound, it very well could be the same issue I encountered.
