A new mural brightens Third Avenue in Chula Vista, adding another splash of color to one of San Diego County’s most dynamic business districts. Located at 460 Third Ave., Suite B—home to cThru Media—the artwork is the result of a collaboration between the digital marketing agency and Southwestern College (SWC). Designed and painted by local San Diego artist Nick McPherson, the mural celebrates education, creativity, and community pride.Bringing the Mural to Life

The idea started as a joint effort between cThru Media and RobertStemler Media, which handles media buying for Southwestern College. With over 25,000 students enrolled, SWC plays a major role in the region’s education landscape, and the mural serves as a visual invitation to explore the school’s programs. Featuring SWC’s signature gold and burgundy colors, the mural highlights the college’s “Jaguar Journey” campaign, designed to guide students toward career paths, job training, and higher education. A QR code in the artwork directs viewers to more information about the school and enrollment.

A Celebration of Learning and Opportunity

The mural goes beyond school spirit—it showcases the diverse programs SWC offers, including STEM education, drone technology, culinary arts, film and media, public safety, and electric vehicles. The college’s Jaguar mascot stands prominently, symbolizing determination and success, while books labeled “Career Education” and “Jaguar Journey” reinforce the message of lifelong learning.

“cThru Media has been part of the Chula Vista community for years—we live, work, and build relationships here,” said Kevin Kearns, founder and CEO of cThru Media. “This mural is a way to support Southwestern College’s mission while adding something visually exciting to the neighborhood.”

    Merging Art with Purpose

For Southwestern College, this marks its first investment in large-scale public art, using creative expression to strengthen its presence in the community. While mural advertising is common in major cities, it’s still a fresh concept in Chula Vista. The collaboration made sense, as SWC’s main campus and its satellite locations—National City, San Ysidro, Coronado, and Otay Mesa—serve the broader South Bay region.

“This mural connects our college’s mission with the community in a meaningful way,” said Jennifer Lewis, dean of the School of Applied Technology and Hospitality Management at SWC. “It’s more than just art—it’s a statement about education, opportunity, and our commitment to the region.”

    Investing in the Future

Beyond its artistic appeal, the mural highlights the strong ties between local businesses and Southwestern College. Many area employers partner with SWC to develop training programs, offer internships, and provide job placements. One of the longtime tenants in the cThru Media building—an insurance agency—has hired several SWC students through the college’s internship program.

“This project is a great example of what happens when businesses and educators work together,” Kearns said. “The mural is more than just paint on a wall—it represents education, opportunity, and collaboration that benefits everyone in the community.”

Residents, business owners, and students are encouraged to check out the mural, snap a photo, and tag #SWCme to share their support. A time-lapse video of the mural’s creation can be viewed online.
