Chicago Bears President Kevin Warren deserves a fist bump for his efforts in the team’s landing of new head coach Ben Johnson.
In an interview with the CHGO squad at the Super Bowl LIX site, ESPN’s Courtney Cronin sheds some light on how important Bears President Kevin Warren was to the team’s successful pursuit of hiring Ben Johnson as its new head coach:
How much impact do you think Kevin Warren had on getting Ben Johnson to Chicago?@CourtneyRCronin: “He was the difference maker in all of this” pic.twitter.com/iN4l25Gz76
— CHGO Bears (@CHGO_Bears) February 4, 2025This was an enlightening exchange:
“I think he was the difference-maker in all of this. When we talked to him after Ben Johnson was hired. … I asked him about, you got the McCaskeys to spend. If you look at what Matt Eberflus was making, which we believe is $6 million a year. What Ben Johnson is making what is believed to be $13 million a year, that is a significant jump.
So to get the McCaskeys to give that financial commitment and not think twice about it knowing that — I think how Kevin Warren phrased it was that you get what you paid for — you paid for the best coach this cycle, the one that everybody wanted. There is an expensive cost associated with that and I don’t know if it was the previous regime if it would’ve gotten done like this.”
If it turns out that Bears President Kevin Warren played an integral role in the Chicago Bears landing the best head coaching candidate in this hiring cycle, we might look back at this moment as the instance in which the narrative around him turned around. And if it was Warren who was able to successfully push Bears ownership to spend money aggressively, then I think Bears fans will eventually come around on the team president. At a minimum, I think there might be a newfound appreciation for Warren after the team reeled in the big fish in this coach hiring cycle.

OK, so Kevin Warren has yet to deliver a new stadium for the Chicago Bears. And based on my interactions with fans in public and online, that seems to be the sticking point with the Bears president. Then again, I was not expecting the stadium deal to (1) be pushed through quickly or (2) be done easily. If you spent as much time as I have studying, researching, and reporting on local, regional, and statewide politics as I have over the years and know that the Bears’ history is littered with things that never get done easily, then you’d likely understand what I do.
KEVIN WARREN CONTINUES TO INSIST THE BEARS WILL BREAK GROUND ON A NEW STADIUM IN 2025
So, yes, Kevin Warren still needs to hold up his end of the bargain when it comes to a stadium deal. And so long as he continues to insist that the team will have shovels in the ground in 2025, we will continue to hold him to that standard. As it stands, we’ve still got 329 days left in this year. Perhaps we should show some patience. After all, we’re Bears fans. We’ve patiently waited for a quarterback prospect like Caleb Williams and a head coach candidate such as Ben Johnson to walk into our lives. What’s a little longer of a wait for the stadium?
Putting the stadium stuff aside, I feel as if the Kevin Warren regime has ushered in an era of change. And I do not believe you have to work hard to find examples of how the Bears are operating differently under his leadership:
(1) The Bears went on Hard Knocks. Bears fans said it would never happen. And because the McCaskey clan had a bit of pull to prevent it from happening, it was easy to understand why. But things changed this past offseason when the team was thrust into the HBO spotlight. It didn’t happen under the old regime, but that it happened under Kevin Warren’s watch feels notable.
(2) They fired coaches *DURING* the season. The Bears hadn’t removed an offensive coordinator during a season since long before any of us were a twinkle in our parents’ eyes. But after a rough patch that followed the bye, the Bears pulled the plug on the Shane Waldron experiment. Weeks later, they fired Matt Eberflus. Removing a head coach during the season is something that had never happened in franchise history. The Bears did the obvious thing when it wasn’t certain that they would do it at all.
(3) Bankrolling the Ben Johnson hire. Convincing George McCaskey to spend freely at the top of the market on a head coach might be Kevin Warren’s greatest accomplishment. Back in December, there was a report about Bears upper management giving the powers that be the green light to spend on a coach and his staff. Not only is that something the Bears never did previously, but it was completely unexpected. And when it came time to put their money where their mouth was, the Bears delivered.
As a fun bonus, Kevin Warren shut the door on the Trace Armstrong pipeline. Perhaps all of this is inconsequential to you. But for me, I can’t ignore the differences between the old regime led by Ted Phillips and the new one led by Kevin Warren in the president’s chair.
Will any of this directly lead to the Bears becoming a Super Bowl contender? That remains to be seen. But after pounding the table for change all these years, I am glad to see some of it take place at Halas Hall. Can I have some more, please?
